Watch to Watch Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and More: April 2021

Zack Snyder goes from superheroes to zombies, Angelina Jolie fights fire with fire, and Emma Stone explores the outrageous origins of a Disney villainess in May’s top streaming picks.

What to Watch on Netflix: May 2021

After the redemptive success of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (aka “The Snyder Cut”), director Zack Snyder tackles a zombie heist film with Army of the Dead (Netflix, May 21). After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries takes a risky gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever. The eclectic cast includes Dave Bautista, Omari Hardwick, Ella Furnell, and Tig Notaro (who digitally replaced Chris D’Elia in the role of a helicopter pilot after the comedian faced allegations of sexual misconduct). It’s The Dawn of the Dead meets Ocean’s 11—and could be the beginning of a fun franchise that brings new life to the zombie genre.

What to Watch on HBO Max: May 2021

In the pulse-pointing action thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead (May 14, HBO Max), a smokejumper (Angelina Jolie) comes to the aid of a 12‐year‐old boy (Finn Little) who has just witnessed the murder of his father (Jake Weber) near a large national forest. Together, they must outwit a pair of assassins (Aiden Gillen and Nicholas Hoult) who’ll do anything to cover up their tracks—including burning down the forest. The heat is on in Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s intense adaptation of Michael Korda’s novel, a survival story that gives Jolie both her most badass role since Salt and her most emotional role since Changeling.

What to Watch on Disney Plus: May 2021

101 Dalmatians’ Cruella de Vil gets an explanatory origin story for her evil exploits in the punk-rock prequel Cruella (May 28, Disney Plus). Set in 1970s London, the film follows Estella (Emma Stone) a fledgling fashion designer who’s grifting on the streets of London when her daring designs catch the eye of the legendary fashionista Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson). But is the Baroness her mentor—or tormentor? What happens next will eventually transform our heroine Estella into the villainess Cruella—and explain (but not justify!) why she wants to make a fur coat out of dogs. Cruella is Disney’s more devilish take on The Devil Wears Prada.

What to Watch on Amazon Prime: May 2021

Expectations are high for The Underground Railroad (May 14, Amazon Prime), as Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel gets the television series treatment from Moonlight director Barry Jenkins. A mere movie couldn’t contain the sprawling story of this audacious alternate history, which follows Cora Randall (Thuso Mbedu) as she attempts to escape slavery (and a bounty hunter, played by Joel Edgerton) in the antebellum South via a literal Underground Railroad. It’s a gut-wrenching, heart-stirring ride.

What to Watch on Hulu: May 2021

The quest for contraception fuels director Natalie Morales’ raunchy, rollicking road trip comedy Plan B (May 28, Hulu). After a regrettable first sexual encounter, a straight-laced high school student (Kuhoo Verma) and her slacker best friend (Victoria Moroles) have 24 hours to cross South Dakota state lines in order to find a Plan B pill. Part Superbad, part Unpregnant, Plan B brings laughter to the morning after.

MRI for Patients with Lower Back Pain: When It is Necessary

MRI for Patients with Lower Back Pain: When It is Necessary

MRI for Patients with Lower Back Pain: When It is Necessary : The MRI (Magnetic resonance Imaging) has revolutionized treatment for people who have lower back pain. It is generally considered to be the only imaging study of the spine that helps plan back pain treatment.

Often, doctors know what to look for on the MRI scan before it is performed.
Intermountain Medical Imaging services such as MRI scans are often used for pre-surgical planning like for decompression or a lumbar spinal fusion. Also, they are useful for ruling out infections or tumors, for differentiating scar tissue from a recurrent disc herniation in patients who have had back surgery, and ruling out the risk of injecting a steroid into a tumor or infection.

How MRIs Work

During an MRI, a magnet is rotated around a patient that alters the excitation level of the body’s hydrogen atoms. If the hydrogen atoms revert to their normal level of activity, they emit radiation that the scanner picks up. The MRI scan images demonstrate the difference between tissues with plenty of water and those that don’t have much.

Should Patients with Lower Back Pain Get an MRI?

Those who are suffering from lower back pain and or leg pain may be wondering if they must get an MRI scan to determine the possible cause of their pain. But, there are some factors to think about for an MRI scan, including limitations with the interpretation of findings and the time of when the scan must be done.

The abnormality that shows up on the scan may not be the cause of back pain. Studies reveal that many people in their thirties and forties have a lumbar disc herniation on their MRI scan and don’t experience any back pain. Thus, an MRI scan can’t be interpreted on its own. Whatever the scan shows must be well-correlated to the situation of the patient including their symptoms and neurological deficits on their physical examination. Also, the only time an MRI scan is immediately necessary is when the patient has progressive weakness in the legs because of nerve damage or bowel or bladder incontinence.

When an MRI is Needed to Diagnose Back Issues

Patients with suspected predominantly leg pain and a lumbar disc herniation must get MRI scans. Surgery for a lumbar disc herniation often carries some unwanted side effects and results in an early return to normal function for the patient. If the patient mainly experiences lower back pain, the only surgical treatment available is a lumbar spinal fusion, which can come with unwanted side effects and carries a longer healing time. Thus, physicians usually recommend waiting 3-6 months before having an MRI scan done. This will let them see if the pain will get better with nonsurgical treatments.

Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit fails drugs test

Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, who provided trainer Bob Baffert with a record seventh win in the race, has failed a drugs test.

Baffert said he was “shocked” after the horse tested above the limit for betamethasone and insisted he had never administered the substance.

“I got the biggest gut punch in racing for something I didn’t do,” he said.

Medina Spirit, ridden by John Velazquez, won America’s most famous race at Churchill Downs on 1 May.

To Infinity And Beyond: The Scientists Taking Asia To Space

AsianScientist (May. 7, 2021) – As proven by classic films like the original Star Wars trilogy and modern blockbusters like Avatar, space—in all its sheer vastness—has been a constant source of fascination for young and old alike. It’s no wonder then that people celebrate their love for the cosmos every first Friday of May.

Today, we’re celebrating Space Day the only way we know how: by honoring the pioneers who put Asia on the map in the international space race—earning their place in the International Astronautical Federation Hall of Fame in the process.

From developing Japan’s first fully domestic rocket to China’s first meteorological satellite, these scientists opened doors for new generations of Asian space explorers to visit worlds beyond our own.

1. From the rising sun to outer space

As one of Japan’s pioneering rocket scientists, Tomifumi Godai headed the production of the first domestically-made carrier rocket, H-II. After earning his bachelor’s degree in aeronautics from the University of Tokyo in 1957, he spent the first years of his career researching and developing rockets designed to carry instruments into sub-orbital flight for scientific experiments.

By 1982, Godai had joined the National Space Development Agency (NASDA), where he quickly set to work on his landmark achievement. Not only was H-II cheaper to produce compared to foreign rockets, but it also gave NASDA the prime opportunity to launch it from their very own Tanegashima Space Center in the 1990s.

True enough, in 1995, the agency launched an H-II rocket carrying the Space Flyer Unit—a spacecraft loaded with research data and testing materials. After spending nearly a year in the cosmos, it became the first Japanese spacecraft retrieved from outer space.
2. Marching China into the cosmos

Meanwhile, in China, rocket scientist Yu Menglun is best known for establishing the country’s launch vehicle trajectory design system. In 1970, the China National Space Administration launched the domestic rocket Long March, which kickstarted the nation’s journey of sending its own satellites into outer space.

Given the difficulties of safely returning satellites from space, Yu rose to the challenge—embarking on numerous simulations to identify the best trajectory for successful satellite return. In the process, he also made strides in improving the ability of rockets to carry cargo and withstand high-altitude winds.

For his efforts, Yu was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999. To this day, he remains a prominent space advocate, taking part in China’s own Space Day celebrations on the 24th of April every year.

3. Meet the satellite specialist

While Godai and Yu blazed the trail—literally—in rocket development, Meng Zhizhong from China dove deep into the science of satellites. Meng’s affair with space started with his involvement in the country’s artificial satellite engineering programs in 1965. Eventually, he rose to the position of chief designer of China’s first meteorological satellite called the FengYun-1, launched in 1988.

The satellite not only monitored China and the surrounding territory, but also delivered relevant data for weather forecasting. Since the program’s establishment, 17 satellites have been successfully launched it—with seven still orbiting the Earth to this day.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Meng also developed a fully digital three-axis-stabilised attitude control system that helps spacecraft stay in their desired orientation as well as China’s first folded collection of solar panels.

Much like space’s seemingly infinite size, these three pioneers have proven the limitless potential of Asia’s scientists. Discover more of the region’s best and brightest minds through the Asian Scientist 100, an annual celebration of Asia’s wealth of scientific talent.

F1 live blog: Spanish Grand Prix

The enthralling rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen continues in Barcelona with the Spanish Grand Prix.

Hamilton clinched his 100th pole position on Saturday, but the Mercedes driver was overtaken by Verstappen on the first turn of Sunday’s race.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo got his Spanish Grand Prix off to a flyer, overtaking two cars on the opening lap to slide into fifth spot.

Lap 25

A cluster of cars quickly rush into the pitlane, including Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas.

Hamilton subsequently reclaims first place, while McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo slid into the top three for the first time.

However, the Australian’s joy was short lived as he also pitted one lap later, rejoining the action in eighth position.

Hamilton eventually changed his tired on the 29th lap, and emerged from the pitlane six seconds behind Verstappen.

Meanwhile, Ricciardo overtook Williams driver George Russell and found himself in a respectable sixth place when Red Bull’s Sergio Perez pitted.

Lap 15

The tires on Hamilton’s Mercedes is showing early signs of blistering as his battle with Verstappen heats up.

“The right rear tyre on Lewis Hamilton’s car looks ugly. It appears blistered — as does the same tyre on Verstappen’s car,” Martin Brundle said on Sky Sports.

“That is the pace these two are going at.”

Hamilton also informed his team the soft-tyre performance was starting to drop off, but he remains about one second behind Verstappen.

Lap 8

A Safety Car has been deployed after Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri had an engine failure on the eighth lap.

Meanwhile, there was chaos in the Alfa Romeo pit lane as one of Antonio Giovinazzi’s tires had a puncture, and the Italian subsequently dropped to the back of the pack.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before … a totally deflated tyre turns up for a pit-stop,” Martin Brundle said on Sky Sports.

Racing continued on Lap 10 once Tsunoda’s car was removed from the track.

To rub salt into the wounds, AlphaTauri teammate Pierre Gasly was handed a five-second penalty for starting the race slightly ahead of the grid slot.

Race start

Max Verstappen got his Spanish Grand Prix off to a flyer, overtaking Lewis Hamilton oat Turn One to clinch the lead early.

After starting the race in seventh, Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo quickly pushed up into fifth spot after overtaking Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz, while McLaren teammate Lando Norris remains in ninth.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also showed his class by passing Mercedes driver Valterri Bottas and sliding into third.

The build-up

Very light rain greeted the drivers on Sunday afternoon as 1000 fans found their seats at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

“The wind can affect the cars a lot and it didn’t maybe feel the best right now on the laps to the grid, but you never know,” McLaren driver Lando Norris said.

“Hopefully a bit of rain can come our way as it will definitely help us I think.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff told Sky Sports: “Whoever is first here after the first couple of corners has a decent chance to win.

“It should be a one-stop, unless someone behind us does something crazy. Then we are flexible.”

F1 villain punished for dog act

Haas recruit Nikita Mazepin has been punished by the FIA after he blocked Lando Norris during qualifying at Barcelona on Saturday.

Mazepin attempted to overtake two cars during Norris’ flying lap in Q1, causing the British driver to get stuck in traffic.

The 22-year-old Russian has copped a three-spot grid penalty for the move.

“Not a good start to quali because of this,” Norris said.

“It put us on the back foot then going into Q3 with only having one set, and especially the first run in Q3 definitely looked better for everyone.

“He was in a tricky situation to be honest, because two cars passed and held him up, so there wasn’t a lot that he could do. Sometimes in Formula 1 it’s like that and especially in qualifying you can’t impede someone like that and it held me up quite a bit, so yeah.

“He would have just had to do that little bit more to make sure he got out of the way but not all the blame was on him. But he definitely could have done a bit more. That was a tough situation for him and unlucky for us.”

Zero new cases recorded in NSW on Saturday

New South Wales has recorded zero new locally acquired cases of COVID-19, scuppering fears of a Mother’s Day lockdown.

Six returned overseas passengers in hotel quarantine tested positive among 22,153 tests in the 24-hour reporting period, NSW Health said on Saturday.

Despite the positive news of no community transmission, mystery still surrounds a couple who contracted the virus this week.

There were fears a lockdown would be implemented over the Mother’s Day weekend after the couple in their 50s tested positive, with tracers unable to pinpoint how they became infected.

It is known a returned traveller in hotel quarantine somehow passed the virus on to the couple, but authorities are yet to identify the missing link between them.

The cases prompted the NSW government to introduce a raft of mandatory health restrictions including face masks in shopping centres and on public transport.

But Sydneysiders have been urged to continue going about their daily lives while taking heed of precautions.

The following rules are in force for Greater Sydney, Wollongong and the Blue Mountains until 12.01am on Monday.

*No more than 20 people allowed inside a home.

*No singing or dancing in indoor venues, including places of worship and entertainment venues (with the exception of weddings).

*Masks are compulsory at all indoor venues, including public transport.

*Only two visitors allowed per resident in aged care facilities.

*Drinking while standing up at indoor venues is not be allowed

In an attempt to stem potential outbreaks, NSW Health on Saturday issued an alert for anyone who visited the Double Bay Woolworths on Kiaora Road between 10.45am and 11am on Monday, May 3.

Anyone who visited the supermarket at that time is considered a casual contact and has been asked to get tested immediately and self isolate until they receive a negative result.
