Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says he still thinks NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro is the “best bloke we’ve got” in the upcoming Eden-Monaro by-election.
The Deputy Premier was considering running for the seat vacated by retiring MP Dr Mike Kelly, but announced in early march he would not be seeking the National party’s candidacy for the seat.
Fellow NSW government frontbencher Andrew Constance was then tipped to become the Liberal Party candidate for the seat, but within 48 hours declared he would not contest.
Mr Canavan told Sky News host Sharri Markson he had “spoken to John (Barilario)” recently and told him if he “changes his mind, just give me a call”.
