AFL news: 2020 Free Agency period, Joe Daniher, Zac Williams, Isaac Smith, Rory Atkins updates, list of players, clubs

Geelong coach Chris Scott admitted he found it hard to get out of bed this week after a shattering grand final defeat – but this will cheer him up.

Hawthorn’s Isaac Smith has declared he wants to be a Cat in 2021, according to the Herald Sun, knocking back offers to finish his career as a one-club player or join Melbourne.

AFL.com.au reported Smith was having trouble with the idea of moving to the Cats, who have been the Hawks’ biggest rival during his career.

But in a bombshell opening to the AFL’s free agency period he’s come around to the idea of joining Geelong, which is also hopeful of adding GWS spearhead Jeremy Cameron and North’s Shaun Higgins in the trade window.

The frenzy continued on Friday morning as Carlton has made a formal offer to Greater Western Sydney’s Zac Williams, the rebounding defender seeking a big-money, long-term move to the Blues.

The AFL is processing the paperwork and the Giants now have three days to decide if they want to match Carlton’s offer.

Former Adelaide star Rory Atkins has also joined Gold Coast as a free agent, inking a four-year deal worth approximately $400,000 a season. In return, the Crows will receive an end of second-round compensation pick.

Brisbane is also looking to pounce on Essendon wantaway Joe Daniher this trade period.

As restricted free agents, Williams and Daniher can only move freely to their new homes if their current clubs choose not to match the contracts they’re offered.

If the Giants and Bombers play hard ball, trades will have to be orchestrated or the players will end up in the draft.

Aidan Corr (GWS to North Melbourne), Jeremy Cameron (GWS to Geelong) and Brad Crouch (Adelaide to St Kilda) are the other restricted free agents looking to move clubs this summer.

There are also a host of unrestricted free agents including Rory Atkins, who is moving from the Crows to the Suns, and Bachar Houli, who is tipped to sign a one-year deal to stay at Richmond.

Free agency runs until next Friday, November 6.
