Line drawn on who is a real WAG ahead of Queensland move

The AFL is set to open up a brand new hub for families and partners of players after announcing all Victorian teams would be Queensland-based for the remainder of the home and away season.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan announced on Wednesday all of the league’s Victorian teams would remain north on the back of a booming second coronavirus wave that has gripped the state.

After initially moving the teams out of Victoria, the AFL had hoped for only a month-long hiatus away from the home of football, but as the second outbreak grows a permanent move became the only viable option.

Players weighed up the option of not joining their teams ahead of the first shift and after the latest decision, the AFL acted by setting up a hub for families and partners at the Mantra resort in Southport.

They’ll serve two weeks quarantine before being able to move in with the players, but not all partners will be flying north.

“Families and loved ones who want to join their partners in Queensland, we will facilitate this,” AFL chief executive officer Gillon McLachlan said.

“There’s some criteria around kids, those who are living with partners and those who are in longer-term relationships.

“It’s not for someone who’s had a partner for a few weeks, but anything that’s of substance, we have people who will work through that criteria. We’re not going to be silly about this.”

The league is set to foot the bill for all clubs to house 100 people, but anything over this number will have to come out of the clubs’ pockets.

Players in short term relations, less than 12 months, will also have to wait until season’s end before reconnecting with their partners.

St Kilda duo Jarryn Geary and Jake Carlisle are reportedly considering flying their pregnant partners up into the hubs to allow them to be present for the births.
