Baby comes home, as B.C. mother remains in ICU due to COVID-19 complications

Dave McIntosh was able to take his newborn son home from the hospital in Abbotsford, B.C., Wednesday, but his wife, Gillian, the mother of their baby, remained in ICU, fighting for her life due to complications from COVID-19.

Gillian McIntosh, 37, started to feel sick in early November. She chalked up her symptoms to pregnancy-related pressure and pain late in her third trimester, but then started feeling worse and was unable to eat.

“That’s when they found out she had pneumonia and tested for positive for COVID,” said Dave McIntosh.

“They said she would be in there hopefully a couple of days … and then, all of a sudden, everything just went haywire.”

The baby was born via emergency C-section; Gillian McIntosh has been in an induced coma and on a ventilator in the hospital’s ICU. Her condition has not improved.

The baby has been in the neonatal intensive care unit for the past two weeks but was released to go home Wednesday.

Dave McIntosh called the day “bittersweet” saying he was overjoyed that his son was coming home, but devastated about his wife still being in hospital.

“He’s a perfect, cute little guy and he’s got a lot of people who are just so excited to meet him,” he said, adding their three-year-old daughter is eager to boss around her new baby brother as soon as she can.

Gillian McIntosh, who remains in critical condition, has had significant damage to a majority of her lung tissue due to the virus, said her husband.

“We don’t know if she’ll end up needing permanent care for the rest of her life. We just have no idea right now.”

Gillian McIntosh’s diagnosis has not been traced back to an exposure event, and her husband said the family is unsure how she contracted the virus. On Wednesday, B.C. recorded another 13 deaths from COVID-19 and 738 new cases of the disease. There are 294 patients in hospital, 61 of whom are in critical care.

The majority of new cases in recent weeks have been in B.C.’s Fraser Health Authority, the region where the McIntoshes live.

Dave McIntosh expressed thanks to the medical staff at Abbotsford Regional Hospital, both in the NICU and ICU as well as the larger community for their kind thoughts, prayers, messages and donations. He also urged the broader community to take the virus as seriously as possible.

Currently, he can only see his wife through Zoom calls because she still has COVID-19.

“We talk to her and [hospital staff] provided a digital photoframe and some sound clips we play for her as well,” he said.

Gillian McIntosh, right, seen with husband Dave and their three-year-old daughter, gave birth to a son via C-section while in an induced coma and on a respirator because of COVID-19. (Submitted to CBC)

It’s not clear whether she is aware of the communication, but Dave McIntosh says he hopes she hears him.

“We just keep telling her all we can about her son, about how much we miss her and hope she gets better.”

Mum, 33, ‘abandoned newborn baby in dirty nappy on doorstep after boyfriend dumped her’

A mum is accused of abandoning her newborn baby son in a dirty nappy on a stranger’s doorstep after her boyfriend broke up with her.

Melissa Kelley has been charged with unlawful desertion and child neglect after allegedly leaving her baby outside the home of the mother of her ex’s new partner in Deltona, Florida.

The 33-year-old allegedly told Patricia Tillman – who she had never met before – her former boyfriend Clayton Zinck would collect the child but he never arrived, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Ms Tillman told police Kelley turned up out of the blue on Sunday night, telling her not to touch the baby as he had scabies.

The mum is alleged to have told the stranger her baby had scabies

The mum is said to have also left an empty bottle and two dirty towels, as well as an opened can of baby formula, before fleeing.

Fox 35 reports the bewildered Ms Tilman then called 911, telling the call handler: “My daughter is dating her ex-boyfriend, or whatever, and she turned back and just left her baby.

“She just pushed the baby in the door and walked away.

She is reported to have said her ex partner would come and collect the child

She is said to have fled the scene before being arrested 30 miles away

“I don’t know her name. I have no idea who she is.”

The alleged incident is said to have taken place around 10.39pm.

Home security footage appears to show Kelley with her baby in a carrier, ringing the doorbell before walking away.

A police report reportedly states Mr Zinck’s parents were contacted but refused to collect the baby or wake up their son.

Volusia County authorities say Kelley texted her family: “Please don’t make me throw this baby in the trash.”

The accused is said to have become suicidal after the break-up with Mr Zinck, threatening to kill herself with drugs.

Officers traced the mum’s mobile phone and found her hiding in a wooded area in Astor, in Lake County, around 30 minutes away.

She was arrested, with the baby now in the care of Department of Children and Families.

The Mandalorian season 2 episode 4 recap: Baby Yoda and Mando reunite with old buddies

Greef Carga, Cara Dune and Mando get shooty, while Mythrol cowers.

Lucasfilm

The Mandalorian season 2 took a nostalgic turn Friday, as episode 4 hit Disney Plus and brought us back to the live action Star Wars show’s roots. Where last week’s episode was a major treat for fans of The Clone Wars, this one paid homage to George Lucas’ Original Trilogy in delightful style.

Episode 3, entitled Siege, was directed by Carl Weathers, who also plays charming bounty hunter boss Greef Carga. Written by series creator Jon Favreau, it sees Mando (Pedro Pascal) stopping for repairs as he tries to bring Baby Yoda (aka The Child) to find former Jedi Ahsoka Tano.

Let’s get into SPOILER town.

Baby Yoda’s midi-chlorians

In the Imperial Remnant base, our heroes are horrified at the sight of some twisted creatures in test tubes — beings that look like the Snoke clones seen in Emperor Palpatine’s lab on Exegol in The Rise of Skywalker.

A holographic message from Dr. Pershing (Omid Abtahi) to Moff Gideon reveals exactly why they want Baby Yoda. They tried to use the blood harvested from the Force-strong little guy to replicate his powers in others, but apparently it didn’t go so well.

“There were promising results for an entire fortnight, but sadly the body rejected the blood,” Pershing says. “I highly doubt we’ll find a donor with a higher M-count though.”

The twisted test subjects look quite like Supreme Leader Snoke.

Lucasfilm/Screenshot by Sean Keane/CNET

He’s referring to Baby Yoda’s midi-chlorian count, a concept introduced in The Phantom Menace that makes many Star Wars fans grit their teeth because it brought a scientific element to the previously mythical Force Midi-chlorians are microscopic life forms in the cells of living beings — an individual’s midi-chlorian count determines their ability to use the Force, and can be determined through a blood test.

Gideon is seemingly trying to create Force-strong beings with Baby Yoda’s blood, but it’s unclear if he’s doing this for his own ends, knowingly working the reborn Palpatine or unknowingly doing Palpatine’s bidding. My money’s on option 3 — we know from The Rise of Skywalker novelization that Palpatine was having difficulty making Force-strong clones for his consciousness to live in.

It’s likely these experiments Gideon is overseeing will result in the creation of Supreme Leader Snoke, the twisted, Force-strong being who’ll lead the First Order — which is basically the Empire — as Palpatine’s surrogate.

This article will be updated shortly.

Moana Hope, Isabella Carlstrom baby, Instagram reveal, natural birth news

AFLW great Moana Hope has revealed model wife Isabella Carlstrom was a “superhero” during a 14-hour labour where she went without any form of pain relief.

The gushing couple this week revealed the name of their first child following a series of Instagram messages about the birthing experience they had with daughter Svea.

Hope revealed the incredible details of Carlstrom’s labour on Instagram on Thursday night alongside the first public image of her wife holding their precious baby.

“I’ve been in love with this woman since the day I met her,” Hope wrote in a heartfelt message.

“My love for her is one that I didn’t think could get any stronger, and then you gave birth to our child.

“First, let me tell you giving birth is the most amazing, and most beautiful thing a human can do.

“It’s also the most exhausting, painful and scariest thing a human can do.

“Mostly scary for me watching the love of my life in pain and feeling helpless.

“Watching her push through 14 hours of labour was the hardest yet most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen.

“She made me feel like I could do anything, yet she was the one giving birth.

“Giving birth is not looked at or appreciated the way it should be. Women who give birth should be looked at like superhero’s. Bell was our superhero, she did so amazing and I’m beyond proud of her.

“She wanted to attempt a natural birth (no pain relief) and she did it. @isabellasofiacarlstrom you are a rockstar, and Svea already has such a strong, beautiful and resilient Mumma to look up to.

“Thank you for bringing our Queen into this world. How the heck do you look this beautiful after giving birth.

“I would look a mess if I did what you did. I love you forever. Both of you.”

The pair, who were married last year, had been sharing their excitement about becoming parents in recent months.

“I’m grateful for the baby I’m about to bring into this world and grateful for the person I’m about to do that with,” Carlstrom recently wrote on Instagram.

“Spending the last nine months in lockdown with you has been truly special. Yes it was difficult but I’ve never felt more connected to you in my whole life.”

Hope has also addressed their plans to parent as a same-sex couple.

“Who is going to be the Dad? We get questions like that often,” she wrote in September.

“My personal opinion on what makes a parent … it’s not the gender, or who makes the money or who’s name it is on the birth certificate.

“It’s someone who loves, protects, and cares for their child. Someone who will never hurt their child. And someone who shows up for their family for the good and challenging times.

“Our baby is going to have 2 loving Parents and those parents happen to be Mums.

“BOTH of us will love our baby, we will work hard to always put food on the table, we both will make sacrifices for our baby.

“We will be a partnership, and we will work together to raise our baby the best we know how.”

Badly malnourished baby owl discovered in Rockefeller Christmas tree

A baby owl has been rescued and rehabilitated after being found roosting in New York City’s Rockefeller Christmas tree.

On Saturday, an arborist discovered the sickly saw-whet owl hidden on a branch after the tree had been chopped down and transported to Manhattan.

The worker’s wife contacted the Ravensbeared Wildlife Center in upstate New York to see if she would be bring in the badly malnourished bird so that it could be nursed back to full health.

‘It had been three days since he ate or drank anything,’ the wildlife sanctuary said in a Facebook post.

The shelter started the owl on a steady diet of fluids and mice, and he is now recovering nicely.

‘So far so good, his eyes are bright and seems relatively in good condition with all he’s been through. Once he checks in with the vet and gets a clean bill of health, he’ll be released to continue on his wild and wonderful journey,’ the center said in their Facebook post.

Many followers responded, calling the story a ‘Christmas miracle’.

The owl has been aptly named ‘Rockefeller’.

But while the tale of the owl may have warmed hearts across the country, others were left feeling frosty by the sight of the scraggly Rockefeller tree as it was erected over the weekend.

Photos of the tree circulated online drawing disparaging remarks from a legion of Scrooges.

‘An accurate representation of 2020,’ wrote Instagram user Liz Eswein, along with a photo of the bedraggled tree.

‘I expected nothing in 2020 to be good nice, or pretty and this tree confirms my dire expectations,’ one Twitter user wrote.

‘Decorate it with some limbs please,’ another chimed in.

‘This is treeson,’ punned one user.

The Rockefeller Center clapped back in a tweet written in the voice of the tree itself: ‘Wow, you all must look great right after a two-day drive, huh? Just wait until I get my lights on! See you on December 2!’

It follows a similar controversy in Cincinnati, where the tree installed in Fountain Square was panned as a shrub reminiscent of ‘Charlie Brown’.

Photos of the tree before it was felled and transported show a lush, symmetrical specimen.

By Saturday afternoon scaffolding had already gone up around the tree, and workers were busy coaxing the limbs back into place and stringing some five miles of lights through its branches.

The tree’s annual lighting ceremony will take place on December 2. There will be no public access to the ceremony, though it will be televised nationally on NBC beginning at 7pm Eastern time.

Visitors should be able to visit the tree during the holiday season — though Mayor Bill de Blasio still hasn’t revealed plans to allow in-person viewing while limiting crowd sizes.

‘Details about how to visit the lit Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree will be announced in the coming weeks,’ the property managers said in a statement.

The holiday cheer comes amid a resurgence in the pandemic in New York City and across the country. De Blasio on Wednesday announced that city schools would close indefinitely as new cases surged.

Every year, the Rockefeller Center tree is decorated with thousands of lights on a five-mile-long wire and topped with a large star. This year’s star will weigh 900 pounds, made up of some 3 million Swarovski crystals on 70 illuminated spikes.

This year’s tree was donated by Daddy Al’s General Store in Oneonta. ‘Daddy Al’ Dick said he was honored to have his tree erected in Rockefeller Plaza, and glad to be rid of the extra yard work it created.

It will likely remain on display in Rockefeller Center until early next year, at which point the tree will be donated to Habitat for Humanity, which will recycle it for use as lumber.

Tishman Speyer, the company that owns Rockefeller Center, has said it’s especially proud to keep up the tree tradition this year.

The pandemic has spurred the cancellation of some other New York holiday customs, such as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

It’s estimated that more than 125 million people typically visit Rockefeller Center during the holidays, but with tourism stalled amid the pandemic, it’s unlikely the usual frenzy will appear this year.

While this year’s tree measures at a towering 75 feet, the tallest ever spruce to stand in the center was seen in 1999, which was 100 foot tall. The tree that year came from Killingworth, Connecticut.
