Chelsea are attempting to pull out of being one of the 12 clubs to form the new European Super League, according to reports developing while the world witnessed wild scenes outside their Stamford Bridge home as fans protested.
Fans had turned on Chelsea and Russian owner Roman Abramovich ahead of their Premier League fixture on Tuesday, when they welcomed Brighton to Stamford Bridge as supporters took to the roads around the stadium to express their disgust at the proposals.
Crowds were filmed shouting obscenities about the Super League and its vice-president, Real Madrid president Florentino Lopez, just as the news broke that the club is “preparing documentation” to ditch the hugely controversioal plans.

Earlier in the day, an innocuous post on Chelsea’s Facebook page about the match had been greeted with promises from hundreds of fans that they would no longer be supporting the two-time Champions League winners and even hoped they lost the game.
A UEFA executive said on Monday that they expected Chelsea to be expelled from this season’s competition, in which they are due to face Madrid in the semi-finals, following an emergency meeting at the administrative body for European football on Friday.

Manchester City are the “benchmark” across Europe but Chelsea “will hunt them” next season, says the London club’s manager Thomas Tuchel.
The teams meet in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday with Tuchel searching for a first win over a Pep Guardiola side.
City are 20 points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea in the league and look set to win a third title in four years.
“We have to accept there is a gap between us and Manchester City,” said Tuchel, who took over in January.
“If you look at the fixture in the Premier League and the fixtures in the last years we have to accept this.
“And it’s important that we accept this without making ourselves too small. From day one of next season we we will hunt them. We will try to close the gap between us.”
German Tuchel said City and German champions Bayern Munich were the “benchmark” in European football.
Guardiola’s side have won seven of their past nine games against Chelsea, including 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in January when Frank Lampard was still in charge.
“We have to admit there is a gap but for 90 minutes we are very self-aware and very self-confident that we believe we can close the gap tomorrow for one game,” Tuchel said.
Tuchel has failed to beat Guardiola in five attempts as a manager – two games with Mainz and three at Borussia Dortmund, all when Guardiola was in charge at Bayern Munich – and said the former Barcelona boss has been a “huge influence” on him.
“When he was coach at Barcelona I didn’t have the chance to know him personally, but I was watching almost every game,” the German said.
“I was very impressed by the way they made success happen, by the style they were playing, all the academy guys, the offensive ball possession.”

But it’s not hard to think of other footballers who would have spent this week exhausting every medical and legal avenue in an effort to play. Injury drama is the stuff of grand final week. In a certain men’s competition we could name, can you imagine the fuss?
Chelsea Randall (right) in action against Collingwood during the AFLW season.Credit:Getty Images
And Randall is first and foremost a footballer, a trailblazer of this pioneering era of the women’s competition, a three-time All-Australian, and already a dual premiership co-captain, which of course does not mean that she has had enough, but yearns for more. It’s why footballers play.
But as the interview shows, Randall is also a leader, conscious always of a good greater than her own.
“As much as I am gutted, devastated, sad that I won’t be taking the field with my teammates in the grand final,” she says, ” the last six months – the last 10 games – haven’t been about me. It hasn’t been about one individual. It’s been about this group.
“They don’t need me. They’ve proven that, themselves. They can get the job done without me.”
She said she would be on the boundary line, anxious and proud like a parent.
When the AFL mandated earlier this year that a concussed player sit out for 12 days, so nearly always ruling him or her out of the next game, some immediately asked: what if it’s a grand final? Now, clarified by Randall, the answer is plain: they don’t play. Full stop.
There was one solution floating around in the footy ether this week. It was to move the bye from the end of the home-and-away series to the week before the grand final. This is unsustainable in two ways. One is that the pre-finals bye has been good for the game, freshening up all teams in the finals.
The other is that a pre-grand final bye for the sake of concussion, a relatively rare occurrence, would be an overreaction. Worse, since we’ve at last decided to take head injuries utterly seriously, it would look like a work-around, which would raise doubts about how seriously we’re taking head injuries after all.
Listen to a leader with her head screwed on.

This story was presented by My Local Pages Australia as part of our national news services.
The Adelaide Crows have been dealt a major blow ahead of Saturday’s AFLW grand final against the Brisbane Lions, with captain Chelsea Randall sidelined due to the AFL’s concussion protocols.
Key points:
Randall was involved in a heavy collision during last Saturday’s preliminary final against Melbourne
She was officially ruled out on Monday afternoon as per the AFL’s concussion protocols
The Crows will be chasing their third AFLW premiership when they face the Lions this weekend
Randall left the field in the first quarter of last Saturday’s preliminary final win over Melbourne at Adelaide Oval after colliding heavily with Melbourne’s Eliza McNamara.
The Crows’ medical staff attended to Randall on the field before deciding she would take no further part in the match.
The defender was ruled out of the grand final late on Monday afternoon due to the AFL’s concussion protocols.
The protocols, introduced earlier this year, state a player must be stood down from selection for a period of 12 days if they have suffered a concussion.
“Randall is a highly respected captain who has not only been a critical part of the development of the Crows women’s program but also a passionate contributor to women’s football in South Australia,” the Crows said in a statement.
“Randall, her teammates and the wider club are disappointed she won’t play this weekend but she will no doubt continue to play an important role in our team.”

Randall and Erin Phillips co-captained the Crows in their 2017 and 2019 grand final victories.

“I definitely don’t regret it,” Davey said this week. “Do I ever think about it? Absolutely. There’s been times where I have thought ‘oh, I wonder if I was still playing soccer’ and things like that.
“I don’t take back my decision whatsoever. I absolutely love playing footy and for me, when I made the swap, it was with the lifestyle, playing soccer and travelling the world, in mind.
‘I definitely don’t regret it. Do I ever think about it? Absolutely.’
Brianna Davey, on her decision to choose the AFLW over soccer
“I was getting to the point where I was burning out a little bit [because of travel with the Matildas] and was really missing my family and being home and being able to enjoy the little things.
“I love being home and love the game of footy. It has always been my number one choice.”
It must also be said that about a year before she chose to play footy Davey had been surprisingly dropped from the Matildas squad for the 2015 World Cup, where the side reached the quarter-finals.
But the Pies co-captain remains in touch with her Matildas friends.

“I have a lot of mates over there playing and it has been tough [because of the pandemic],” Davey said. “We are fortunate here. I feel for them and the girls who couldn’t get home over Christmas, that’s really hard stuff.
“Steph [Catley of Arsenal and the Matildas] is one of my best friends. We played all our juniors together and essentially grew up together.
“We chat often and keep in touch as much as we can. When we see each other it’s like nothing has changed.

“She is an incredible athlete and someone I have always looked up to and loved as a person.”
The Pies developed into one of the AFLW’s best teams in 2021 but missed a top-two finish after losing two of their last three matches, pushing them into their clash with North Melbourne in the first week of the finals on Saturday.
“This group has a great connection and care for each other,” Davey said. “We don’t want to be leaving this season [losing to North this week] with that sour taste in our mouth, thinking that we could have done better.”

London: Chelsea beat Sheffield United 2-0 on Sunday to reach the FA Cup semi-finals for the fourth time in five seasons.
The win came courtesy of an Oliver Norwood own goal and a late strike from winger Hakim Ziyech.

The victory at Stamford Bridge extended Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start in London – the German has now won 10 matches and drawn four in all competitions since replacing Frank Lampard in January.
Chelsea have moved into contention for a top-four finish in the Premier League and reached the Champions League quarter-finals, but Tuchel said he witnessed a tired performance from his team on Sunday.
Loading
“It sounds excellent to say we’re through to the semis, [but] it was a tough match. We had a good first half where we controlled everything,” Tuchel told the BBC.
“We lost control in the second half, we were clearly tired. After 14 consecutive matches I could feel we were tired and we made many little faults. We were lucky to keep the clean sheet in the second half.”
Sheffield United, bottom of the Premier League, showed early attacking intent but fell behind in the 24th minute when Norwood steered the ball into his own net as he attempted to block Ben Chilwell’s shot.
With the Blades throwing men forward in the dying seconds, Ziyech produced a fine finish after a quick counter-attack to seal Chelsea’s win in added time.

Mason Mount has three goals in eight Premier League appearances under Thomas Tuchel, after scoring two in 18 under previous boss Frank Lampard this season
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson says they cannot “rely on the past” after Chelsea inflicted a fifth successive competitive home defeat on the reigning Premier League champions for the first time in their history to leave them battling to make the top four.
Mason Mount’s superb individual strike three minutes before half-time gave the visitors a deserved win and extend their unbeaten run under boss Thomas Tuchel to 10 games.
It moved them into the top four, while Liverpool are now in seventh place and in a serious dogfight for the Champions League places.
The Reds, who won the title last season by 18 points, had gone 68 home league matches unbeaten before their current was started with a loss to Burnley in January.
“Last season is over with, it is done,” Robertson told Sky Sports. “We have nowhere near been good enough to what Liverpool team should be. We are dropping further and it is not good enough.
“Games are running out and we need to put the pressure on the teams below us. People will think we are down and out and we need to get the results to show them we are not. At the moment we are not doing that.
“We can’t rely on the past.”
Mount scored brilliantly when he cut inside to fire a low shot past Liverpool keeper Alisson, reward for a first half dominated by the Blues, who also had a Timo Werner effort ruled out for offside.
Liverpool, for whom a visibly angry Mohamed Salah was substituted just after the hour, barely threatened but were furious when penalty claims were rejected by the video assistant referee after Roberto Firmino’s cross clearly struck N’Golo Kante’s hand.
Alisson had to save well from the lively Werner, but one goal was enough to give Chelsea and Tuchel another fine victory as they move four points ahead of the Reds.
“You saw the game – it was a tight one, it was a close one, it was an intense one,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp told BBC Sport. “We forced them to make mistakes, they forced us to make mistakes. They used one, we didn’t use ours.
“Against Chelsea, it would be surprising to play them off the pitch – but we were in the game. It is just annoying to talk about the same things again and again. It is tough. We have to fight through this.”
Tuchel’s Anfield win tastes sweet
I see improvement every game – Tuchel on ‘complete’ Chelsea performance
Tuchel’s beaming smile and congratulations for his Chelsea players will have carried an added tinge of pleasure as he finally experienced victory at Anfield.
Tuchel has suffered last-minute losses at the stadium in a Europa League quarter-final with Borussia Dortmund and then in a subsequent Champions League game with Paris St-Germain.
He and Chelsea were not to be denied here, though, and while Liverpool will debate why they were not awarded that second-half penalty, no-one could seriously question the fact that the visitors were vastly superior to the beleaguered champions as they fall hard and fast from last season’s status.
Tuchel has had a rejuvenating impact on Chelsea since succeeding the sacked Frank Lampard in January, and victories like this – albeit against a Liverpool team who appear to be a sitting duck at Anfield these days – will increase confidence and belief.
Mount deserved his goal for a performance of the highest quality, while Kante looked back to his best as he patrolled midfield.
Werner gave one of his finest displays since joining Chelsea and deserved a goal of his own, while Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger performed with such efficiency in defence that Liverpool did not have an effort on target until Georginio Wijnaldum’s tame 84th-minute header.
All in all, it was an excellent night’s work for Tuchel and Chelsea.
“I am very, very happy with the performance,” said Tuchel. “It was clear we needed a complete performance in all aspects of the game. We did this, we were very brave with the ball and never lost intensity with the ball.
“We were always aggressive and very brave. This was the key. It was a top team performance and a deserved win.
“Both teams started in a high level of speed and intensity. We knew that. We told the team we don’t want to give too much information. When you arrive in a match like this you cannot overthink it.
“We managed all situations very, very good. Very, very encouraging.”
Liverpool and Klopp plunge further into crisis
Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea: Fine margins costing Reds says Klopp after fifth home loss in a row
The statistics surrounding Liverpool’s slump are stacking around them like rubble as they suffered another defeat in this truly desperate Premier League title defence.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have created unwanted history with those five defeats, they have not scored from open play in more than 10 hours at Anfield – a shocking run emphasised by the fact they only lost four matches here in the first five years and three months of the German’s tenure.
Nothing summed up their current condition than the sight of the clearly infuriated and mystified Salah reacting in very discontented fashion after his substitution in the 62nd minute.
Liverpool will plead their case for that penalty but this cannot disguise yet another stale, limp Anfield display in the arena where they carried such a fear factor for years.
It has disappeared, as Burnley – who ended that 68-match unbeaten home league run – Brighton, Manchester City, Everton and now Chelsea have proved.
Liverpool face a serious fight to finish in the top four, with neighbours Everton three points ahead of the champions in fifth with a game in hand.
These are statements that would have been barely believable at the start of the season, but this is Liverpool’s brutal new reality.
Liverpool’s unwanted history – the best of the stats
Liverpool have become the first English top-flight reigning champions to lose five consecutive home league games.
Since Tuchel took charge of his first league game as Chelsea boss on 27 January, only Manchester City (24) have picked up more points than the Blues during his eight games as manager (18). Tuchel’s predecessor Lampard took seven points from his final eight games in charge.
Liverpool have just 10 points from 11 Premier League games in 2021 – only West Brom (nine), Newcastle (seven) and Southampton (four) have picked up fewer points since the turn of the year.
Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy has kept 12 clean sheets in 22 Premier League starts (55%). Of the 210 goalkeepers to have started at least 10 games in the competition, he is the only one to keep a clean sheet in more than half.
Mount has scored 12 and assisted eight goals in the Premier League for Chelsea. At 22 years 53 days, he is the second-youngest player to reach 20 goals and assists for the club in the competition after their former winger Arjen Robben (21 years 337 days).
Liverpool’s Salah was substituted in the 62nd minute – the only time he was been taken off earlier in a Premier League game at Anfield was for Chelsea against the Reds in April 2014 (60th minute).
What’s next?
Liverpool are at home again on Sunday, with struggling Fulham the visitors for a 14:00 GMT kick-off. Chelsea are in action the next day, with another top-four challenger, Everton, the visitors to Stamford Bridge at 18:00.

Chelsea are aiming to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2013-14
Olivier Giroud’s spectacular overhead kick gave Chelsea an outstanding victory against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last 16 first leg in Bucharest.
Giroud’s superb moment of improvisation not only delivered the win and a vital away goal but also continued new manager Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start at Chelsea and put them in pole position to reach the quarter-finals.
In a tie played in Romania instead of Spain because of Covid-19 restrictions, Giroud demonstrated athleticism and technique to send an acrobatic effort beyond Atletico keeper Jan Oblak in the 68th minute. The goal was originally ruled out for offside before a video assistant referee review revealed the ball had bounced off Atletico defender Mario Hermoso.
It was reward for Chelsea’s more progressive style in the face of the usual attritional approach from Diego Simeone’s Atletico. They rarely troubled Tuchel’s side who comfortably kept the in-form but increasingly frustrated Luis Suarez at bay.
Chelsea have now gone eight matches unbeaten since Tuchel succeeded Frank Lampard while Giroud is emerging as their Champions League talisman after scoring all four goals in the group-phase victory against Sevilla and a last-minute winner away to Rennes.
Tuchel was quick to praise the impact of 34-year-old World Cup winner Giroud and said: “If you see him on a daily basis, you cannot be surprised. He is totally fit, his body is in shape and his physicality is on top level.
“He trains like a 20-year-old, like a 24-year-old. He is a guy who has a good mixture of serious and joy in training. He is always positive and it is a big factor for the group.”
Tuchel’s biggest statement yet
Tuchel’s Chelsea have been efficient rather than spectacular since the German coach was appointed following Lampard’s departure in January – but there will be no complaints after the most impressive result of his brief time in charge.
Chelsea were regarded as underdogs in this last-16 tie against the La Liga leaders but apart from a couple of early scares – keeper Edouard Mendy miscontrolled early in the game before Suarez flashed the ball across the face of goal – they were in charge.
They showed more ambition than a strangely lethargic and even more cautious than usual Atletico.
It will increase Chelsea’s confidence that they have appointed a coach who is comfortable operating at the highest levels after reaching the Champions League final with Paris St-Germain last season and impressing at Borussia Dortmund.
And once again Giroud proved what an intelligent and talented player he is with a piece of ingenuity that settled a tight game to give Chelsea high hopes going into the second leg.
Giroud has proved time and again he is invaluable to Chelsea’s cause, demonstrating what a bargain buy he was at £18m from Arsenal in January 2018.
It was also a good night for young England forward Callum Hudson-Odoi, who performed creditably after the debate surrounding his substitution after coming on as a substitute in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Southampton.
Hudson-Odoi was replaced again after 79 minutes in Bucharest but this was after a performance full of energy and hard work that will have delighted taskmaster Tuchel on a highly satisfying night for Chelsea.
Atletico still pose a threat – but this was poor
This was a dismal showing from an Atletico Madrid side who have been excellent domestically in heading Real Madrid, Sevilla and Barcelona.
Atletico adopted a more conservative approach than Chelsea despite this being their ‘home’ leg, albeit on neutral territory, and the old streetfighter Suarez was reduced to familiar moments of gamesmanship in a bid to unsettle his opponents. It was all to no avail as the Premier League side held firm.
It was a game that pointed to Chelsea building the platform for progress in the second leg but Atletico’s resilience, ability to fight the odds and love of being the underdog still makes them a threat.
Simeone will need to inspire a big performance from his players in the second leg but they can never be written off, as Liverpool – rampant in the Premier League at the time – painfully discovered when they were eliminated by Atletico over two legs at this stage last season, completed by a 3-2 win at Anfield after coming from 2-0 down.
Chelsea achieved a superb result and their destiny is now in their own hands but Tuchel will not, and cannot, allow for any complacency against an Atletico team who may just revel in the task facing them in the second leg.
Another Champions League goal for Giroud – the stats
Thomas Tuchel became the third Chelsea manager to win his first Champions League game in charge when the game took place in the knockout stage after Roberto Di Matteo and Guus Hiddink.
Atletico Madrid failed to have a shot on target against Chelsea – the first time they had failed to register a shot on target in a Champions League game since March 2019 v Juventus.
Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud has scored six Champions League goals this season, his best return in a single campaign in the competition.
Giroud (34 years and 146 days) became the oldest player to score a Champions League knockout goal for Chelsea.
Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy has kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the Champions League this season (five).
Mason Mount’s yellow card after 55 seconds was the quickest card shown in the Champions League this season.
Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea and PSG) became only the second manager in the history of the Champions League to manage two different clubs in the competition within a single season after Ronald Koeman in 2007-08 (PSV and Valencia).
‘A big reward’ – what they said
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel told BT Sport: “Fantastic result, fantastic goal. Well deserved.
“We wanted to dominate in the opponents’ half, to never lose concentration, not to do any easy mistakes and always be aware of quick counter-attacks for all their quality.
“It was a very disciplined performance – a deserved shut-out. This is the hard work, a team effort – the basis for a big win.
“We knew they were ready to suffer with eight people in the box. The intention was to keep the intensity high. This is what we did very good. We never let them breathe or come out for counter-attacks. We have a big reward with this result.
“This is one of the toughest challenges to open a defence like Atletico.”

The £45million summer signing halted a well-documented run of 14 top-flight games without a goal at Stamford Bridge to help seal a 2-0 victory over Newcastle – in-form Chelsea’s fifth in a row across all competitions under Tuchel and fourth on the bounce in the League – that saw them leapfrog Liverpool and West Ham into the top four.
Getting the best out of Werner and compatriot Kai Havertz – who has also flattered to deceive since his £71m switch from Bayer Leverkusen – was said to be a crucial factor behind the Blues’ decision to appoint German former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund boss Tuchel as Frank Lamapard’s managerial successor last month.
And while Werner only ended his barren run on Monday, the former RB Leipzig star has delivered a sequence of improved performances under Tuchel that have included assists and penalties earned.
“It’s helped me that someone can scream at me in German – he’s a really good guy, has a good idea of the football we want to play and when we have more and more training sessions with him we will get better and better,” Werner told BBC Sport after the win over struggling Newcastle.
“A few weeks ago we were somewhere and nowhere and we were a lot of points behind fourth place, we want to keep going.
“Only four points to second place and lots have said we won’t reach [the] top four at the end of the season, but here we are. We have a good shape, we’re back on track.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said his side failed to show “enough courage” in their narrow FA Cup win over Championship side Barnsley.
Tammy Abraham scored the winner with his side’s only attempt on target to book a quarter-final home tie with Sheffield United.
Abraham was forced to make a headed goal-line clearance towards the end to deny Barnsley substitute Michael Sollbauer an equaliser.
“We scored the goal and I had the feeling that they increased the risk, but we stepped down in the little decisions,” added Tuchel, who made 10 changes to his side.
“Not enough courage and it was too deep for a long, long time. We clearly can play better, so yes I expected more but not in terms that I am frustrated.
“We can do better but I don’t want to be too hard on the players.”
Hard-working Barnsley were the better team in the first half with Kepa Arrizabalaga blocking Callum Brittain’s attempt at point-blank range.
The hosts claimed Abraham was offside for his goal but the England forward just held his run to ensure he was onside to finish from close range.
Chelsea are now unbeaten in five games since Tuchel took charge in January and will entertain Sheffield United in the sixth round on the weekend of 20-21 March.
Chelsea’s fringe players given chance to impress new boss
Chelsea were languishing ninth in the Premier League when Tuchel took charge but are now one point off the top four and two wins from a fourth FA Cup final in five seasons.
This was a chance for Tuchel to take a first close look at his fringe players but they largely struggled to impress – and failed to register an attempt on target during a disjointed first half.
Kepa, demoted by previous boss Frank Lampard in favour of Edouard Mendy, kept his side on level terms with a fine save to keep out Brittain, who should have scored after Alex Mowatt’s cross was flicked into his path.
In addition to Kepa, Emerson Palmieri, Kurt Zouma and 19-year-old midfielder Billy Gilmour were also appearing for the first time under Tuchel, while Christian Pulisic and N’Golo Kante made first starts since the German came in.
Brittain went close again after firing through a sea of legs, while Chelsea’s only meaningful first-half attack ended up with Pulisic sending Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross wide.
The winning goal came from a lovely move with Gilmour at its heart. The ball eventually came to James who squared to Abraham for his 12th goal of the season.
Even then Chelsea had to endure a nervous ending against an impressive Barnsley side full of energy.
Sollbauer went close to equalising only for Abraham to clear his goal bound attempt as Chelsea lived dangerously.
‘Proud of the performance’ – what they said
Barnsley boss Valerien Ismael: “It’s exactly the game we wanted, we made a great performance. We could see how far we can bring our principles, to make Chelsea make mistakes, we did it perfect in the first half but we had to score.
“It was a change in the second half, Chelsea made a change of shape and had more control. We were punished for one moment which was a shame. But we kept fighting to the end, we are proud of the performance.”
Chelsea boss Tuchel on playing Sheffield United in the quarter-finals: “It’s going to be a tough one. They are a very physical team that presses high. They are organised but I am happy to have a home game. This is what we wanted.”
Chelsea in more FA Cup quarters than any other side this century
Since – and including – the year 2000, Chelsea have reached the FA Cup quarter-final more times than any other side, with victory against Barnsley ensuring their 15th appearance in the last eight in that time.
Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham has been involved in nine goals in his last seven starts in the FA Cup (6 goals, 3 assists).
Since the start of last season, Abraham has scored 30 goals for Chelsea in all competitions, at least 11 more than any other player at the club.
No opposition player has scored against Chelsea in 450 minutes of action under manager Thomas Tuchel, with the Blues’ only goal conceded under the German coming via an own goal against Sheffield United.
What’s next?
Barnsley return to Championship action away at Brentford on Sunday (13:00 GMT), while Chelsea host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday (20:00).
