Sydney Swans gun Tom Papley has opened up on why he was seeking a trade away from the club back in 2019.
Papley intended to return to Victoria just over 12 months ago, which would’ve allowed him to be closer to his family and help with his father’s struggles.
Speaking on former Blue and Giant Dylan Buckley’s podcast Dyl and Friends, Papley revealed his old man’s battle with bipolar disorder played a big part in the discussions emerging.

A trade was never struck between Sydney and Carlton, after Essendon refused to move on a deal for Joe Daniher with the Swans.
“I asked for a trade. A few times that year I went home and it was probably early on I was feeling it a bit, as everyone feels you feel a bit homesick and then during the year I went home and had a few beers with my old man and had a bit of an argument I suppose,” he explained.
“He‘s actually got bipolar, so that turned into a little bit of an episode. I’ve never really spoken about it, not many people actually know.
“So he has a bit of an episode, I sort of felt guilty, that it was my fault. The next day we were fine and everyone has a blue with their old man, but this time it was a little bit more serious.”
Papley explained the argument made him consider his future in New South Wales, wanting to be back with family and help them go through the process.
“Growing up, he‘s always been in mental homes. I didn’t really know until later in my teenage years what was really going on … so I sort of felt that little bit of guilt,” Papley said.
“At the end of the day I just wanted to be back home … you want to help mum and be there for your brother and sister so I sort of felt a bit of guilt and that it was my fault. At the end of the day I just wanted to be home.
“I kept it inside, I didn‘t really tell anyone. I told my manager obviously and that’s probably the biggest thing to just to speak about it.”
“Later on in the year I asked for a trade and it didn’t happen. It (trade discussions) put more stress on my old man and more stress on me.
“Now I‘m back at the Swans and I’m loving it and my old man is flying. Now he’s happy to talk about it.
The star Swan has since become an ambassador for Mindful Aus and remains contracted at the club until the end of 2023.
