Greater Western Sydney GWS Giants stun Sydney Swans for first Sydney derby win at Spotless Stadium; AFL 2021


The Giants’ other co-captain, Callan Ward, won the Brett Kirk Medal for his inspiring 31-possession effort, as his young side answered all questions about their ability to last four quarters by overwhelming the Swans 6.4 to 0.5 in the last term.

It was easily the most significant of the four wins GWS has achieved, the others coming against Gold Coast and Port Adelaide in 2012 and Melbourne last year.

“Going through these tough times really does make you enjoy the days that are good,” midfielder Ward said.

The Giants led 19-12 early before the Swans kicked three straight goals to set up a 13-point lead at the first break.

Cameron said during the delay he addressed areas like contested ball and clearances in which they subsequently lifted after play resumed.

Swans coach John Longmire lamented his side’s inability to capitalise on a dominant period in the second quarter in which they led by as much as 24 points, but were outscored 3.0 to 1.6.

“We didn’t take those chances in that first half, that second quarter in particular,” Longmire said.

“Then they really lifted after halftime and we couldn’t go with them.

“We should have responded particularly in the last quarter.

“We didn’t hit the bodies hard enough and weren’t clean enough. We missed tackles – all the things you can’t afford to do.”

Asked about Franklin’s effort Longmire said: “He was quiet, we had a few.”

The day started badly for Sydney, with co-captain Kieren Jack pulling out with a sore back.

It got even worse during the reserves match when defender Alex Johnson suffered another knee injury and will require a third knee reconstruction in a year.

Twenty months on from the last time they met in Sydney, both teams will take on a different look on Saturday afternoon, and a handful players on each side of the fence will be running out for their first crosstown match. The injury-hit Giants are bringing through a new generation while the Swans are a little further advanced in that process, having opened the season 4-0 to the shock of pretty much every AFL pundit and observer.

The Giants, 3-1 after a much-needed win over Collingwood, will go in as rank outsiders – particularly with ex-skipper Phil Davis, the man who usually handles Lance Franklin, out through injury. Cameron said that job will likely be shared by defenders Sam Taylor and Lachie Keeffe, although he rightly noted that Sydney have multiple avenues to goal these days that need to be accounted for.

The Swans, meanwhile, will be without star forward Isaac Heeney and skipper Dane Rampe, who are both nursing hand injuries. Heeney broke his hand in Thursday’s win over Essendon while striking Brandon Zerk-Thatcher in an off-the-ball incident, while Rampe broke his finger at training in the lead-up to their win over Richmond two weeks ago – but, in typical fashion, played through the pain for as long as he could.

Nathan Buckley promises change after upset defeat to Giants


Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has acknowledged change is needed after the Magpies lost to an undermanned Giants to drop off the pace after four rounds with just one win to their name.

They will head to Perth to face a rebounding West Coast at Optus Stadium down on form and without midfielder Taylor Adams, who suffered a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury in the loss to the Giants.

“You can’t be one and three and sit on your hands,” Buckley said. 

“We think we have picked the best side to get results and we haven’t so we have to look at changes, whether that is the way we play, whether we strip things back, the way we prepare or personnel.”

Collingwood made just one change after their one point loss to the Brisbane Lions including veteran Levi Greenwood for Tyler Brown and have stuck with underperforming players for the first month of the season.

Buckley said the team was still doing some things well and the win over Carlton and one point loss to Brisbane in the previous two rounds indicated they had rebounded from a lacklustre opening round, but the loss to the Giants showed there was an urgent need to improve.

“We’re not in a hole. We need to address this right now and turn it around,” Buckley said.

“After tonight there is enough evidence there that we need to change something up.”

Buckley pointed out that winning contests in the forwardline remained an issue and was an area that needed addressing, with the Magpies only scoring above 72 points in one match this season when they kicked 106 points to defeat Carlton in round two.

A: It is hard to get a handle on how the game is played this year with the new rule, but it is a big thing with us in defence. Where the boys position, allows me to take the marks and that’s my job. Credit to the team. It was a hard-fought win.

A: I almost missed my boot a few times tonight. Hope I get another chance.

Q: It was stuff conditions tonight. You spoke about missing your boot. It is tough at night on the Gold Coast with the sweaty conditions.
A: Yeah, it is. At the start it was really sticky in the first quarter, quarter and a half, and then the sweat comes down. It was like a wet weather game. We knew Gold Coast would be hard in the contest. The boys fought it out really well.

Q: We were talking in the call about how good a combination that you and Jacob Weitering have become. He did a great job on Ben King and with you taking so many intercept marks, it is a solid defence you have got together.
A: The way he has developed, he is so strong and such a student of the game. I’ve learned so much off him. I would hate to play up against him every week.

Q: Jonesy, you spoke about the change in the game with some of the changes in the game with some of the rule changes this year. So, what adjustments have you had to make as a key defender?
A: I think it is – you know, usually you could use the man on the mark for a bit of leverage, so the ball had to be popped a bit so you could afford to play back shoulder, now the way the ball is coming through the air, you almost have to play front. In the old system, if it goes over your head, you had someone to help. It is about being on your toes and reacting a bit faster.

Greater Western Sydney Giants director Jimmy Bartel defends coach Leon Cameron


Lachie Whitfield will resume contact work in his return from a liver injury this week.

“Lachie saw his specialist last week and he’s given him the clearance to start some contact work so he’s going to start that this week which takes him a step closer to playing,” Ball said.

“He just needs to build a bit of fitness and match conditioning now and we’ll hopefully get him back in the next couple of weeks.”

Bartel backs Cameron after 0-3 start

GWS Giants director Jimmy Bartel has backed coach Leon Cameron after his side slipped to a 0-3 start to the season following Sunday night’s loss to Melbourne.

Bartel said Cameron’s night in the coaches box wasn’t to blame for the 34-point loss to the Demons in Canberra, after the side was decimated by the injuries to Coniglio, Davis and de Boer throughout the match.

“I thought his coaching performance was pretty good last night, considering what ended up happening throughout the game,” Bartel said on 3AW on Monday.

“They started the game brilliantly when they had a full 22 plus the sub.

“You’ve got to judge him on what’s available for Leon Cameron, you can’t then judge him like he’s got a full list. If he doesn’t have a full list, you’ve got to judge him on his coaching performance.

“There’s not too many coaches who have their side constantly picked at but that’s just the nature [of the beast].”

Bartel said the Giants haven’t been able to replace talent and top-up with mature-aged players like some other premiership contenders, having lost key forward Jeremy Cameron and midfielders such as Dylan Shiel in recent seasons.

“These other finals contenders are adding,” he said.

“We look at Geelong today; they’ve added [Shaun] Higgins, [Isaac] Smith, Cameron. Richmond over the years have added [Dion] Prestia and Tom Lynch. Port Adelaide add Aliir [Aliir] and [Orazio] Fantasia.

“The Giants aren’t adding. They’re always replacing talent at the draft but it’s not mature talent, it’s a 18-year-old talent.

“Last year was bad and they own that, but the year before they played in the grand final and the previous three years they played in prelims and semi-finals.”

Bartel said Cameron, who is in his eighth season at the helm, and the Giants would be judged on their consistency of effort over four quarters.

“I can tell you what’s not successful and that was the game against Freo when they got beaten in contested footy by 30, when they’ve got players who are very good contested [players],” Bartel said.

“Whereas against Melbourne in Canberra the other night, I think you can walk away as a Giants person and go they threw everything at them, and they ran out of cattle and they ran into a very well organised side, who have got their confidence up.”

The Giants have a defining three weeks coming up, with matches against Collingwood, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs.
