Canberra chief executive Don Furner told The Sun-Herald: “That’s surprising to hear [he was here] because we needed all the details of every single person here for contact tracing. I can tell you Isaac Moses was not on any list.”

Many in the game will be wondering if it was a good look to have a deregistered agent such as Moses in the stands with family members cheering on the game’s most-hyped teenager.

Moses was banned by the NRL in June for breaching his obligations as an agent in 2017 by “counselling, procuring and assisting one of his clients [former Parramatta captain Tim Mannah] to give evidence to the NRL that was false and intended to mislead an investigation by the NRL Integrity and Compliance Unit.”

He lost his appeal to that decision in January.

Moses, who had some of the biggest names in the game on his client list, did not respond to calls for comment when contacted by The Sun-Herald.

An NRL spokesman said on Saturday evening: “Mr Moses is not permitted to negotiate NRL playing contracts on behalf of any player. All clubs have been warned they face sanctions if they negotiate player deals with any unaccredited person. There is no restrictions on Mr Moses attending rugby league matches.”

There is no suggestion Moses discussed player contracts at the game.

Suaalii had South Sydney and Rugby Australia pushing hard for his services before the Roosters snuck under both their guards and signed him to a two-year deal. Moses has been associated with the family in the past, but had nothing to do with brokering Suaalii’s Roosters contract, which was negotiated by his father Chris Suaalii. Family members are allowed handle player contracts.

The Roosters are awaiting confirmation from the NRL whether they will be allowed to play Suaalii, still in year 12 at The King’s School, before he turns 18 on August 1.

While Chris Suaalii preferred not to comment about Joseph’s big afternoon, uncle Amani Suaalii, said of his nephew: “The sky is the limit for him. He is doing all right with the hype, he knows where he is going, we just let him do what he wants to do. I can’t wait [to see him play first grade]. He is ready.”

It remains to be seen if and when when Moses can officially return to the game as an agent.

Police investigating two shootings and one stabbing in Sydney’s west


Police are investigating a possible case of mistaken identity which led to a drive-by shooting in Sydney overnight.

The shooting was one of a series of violent crimes to occur in Sydney’s western suburbs since yesterday.

About 3pm on Friday, police and emergency services were called to Betty Cuthbert Avenue in Ermington, following reports a man had been stabbed.

A 30-year-old man was found with a single stab wound to the abdomen and was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Three hours later, around 6.30pm, investigators were informed the man’s younger brother, a 28-year-old, had admitted himself to Westmead Hospital with a gunshot wound to his right thigh.

The injury is not considered life threatening.

Investigators believe the two incidents are linked.

Then, about 10.10pm, police were called to a third incident in Merrylands, following reports of another shooting.

Police arrived to find a bullet hole in a back room of a house house on Lockwood Street.

The five occupants of the house, who were inside at the time, were not injured.

Police have been told a vehicle was seen driving slowly along the residential street, before a number of rounds were fired.

The vehicle, described as a black 4WD or hatchback, then drove quickly from the scene.

Police believe that the shooting is a case of mistaken identity.

Police have not said if they consider the drive-by shooting to be connected to the other acts of violence.

WHO team investigating coronavirus in China visits Hubei Centre for Disease Control and Prevention


A World Health Organization-led team investigating the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic has visited the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in China’s central region of Hubei, where the outbreak emerged in late 2019.

The group of independent experts spent about 4.5 hours on its longest site visit since completing two weeks of quarantine last Thursday, and did not speak to waiting journalists.

The WHO, which has sought to manage expectations for the mission, said its members would be limited to visits organised by their Chinese hosts and would have no contact with community members because of health curbs.

The group has so far also visited hospitals where early cases were detected, markets, and an exhibition on the battle with the outbreak in the provincial capital of Wuhan.

No full itinerary for the group’s field work has been revealed, and journalists covering the tightly controlled visit have been kept at a distance from team members.

Yanzhong Huang, senior fellow with the Council of Foreign Relations in Washington, said two weeks in the field was not much time for the experts.

“I don’t think they have the time to get any conclusive results,” he said.

“It is more like communication and information exchange.

Beijing has sought to cast doubt on the notion the coronavirus originated in China, pointing to imported frozen food as a conduit.

That hypothesis emerged again on Sunday in the Global Times tabloid run by the ruling Communist Party’s People’s Daily.

Police investigating after infant’s death



The seven-week-old was declared deceased around 9:30pm Sunday at a Palm Beach unit complex. The baby was dead on the arrival of both police and paramedics to the Brooke Ave home.It’s understood the baby’s mother was home at the time of the tragic incident. Both the youngster’s parents were last night assisting police with their inquiries, however the cause of the baby’s death remains undetermined. Police are treating this incident as non suspicious, while they await the results of a post-mortem.

Queensland police investigating alleged murder of man stabbed in Ingham street



Queensland police are investigating the alleged murder of a 20-year-old Ingham man in the north Queensland town on Sunday night.

Police said the man was walking with two women on Mcilwraith Street at 11:30pm when they were approached by another man.

Police allege the two men started fighting and the 20-year-old was stabbed in the stomach.

Officer gave him first aid before paramedics arrived to take him to Ingham Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:40am, just over an hour after the incident.

On Monday, police said they were still searching for the alleged attacker.

Officers saw him at the scene when they started giving first aid to the injured man, but he fled soon after, they said.

They’re appealing for information about the alleged attack, including any relevant CCTV or dashcam footage.

Hinchinbrook Shire Mayor Raymon Jayo said he was “horrified” to learn of the incident and asked residents to assist police.

“This is terrible news,” he said.

“I’m horrified that an incident of this nature can occur in our community.

“If anyone has any information out there I would really appreciate it if they could cooperate with the police.

“Provide that information so that we can apprehend the perpetrator in this matter and as a community show that we will not tolerate this.

“The only way we can do that is by assisting the police in bringing charges where they should be laid,” he said.

Police investigating after driver leaves the scene of crash | The Border Mail

Police are investigating a car crash after the driver left the scene. A man crashed a white Mazda on Chiltern-Beechworth Road about 11pm on Saturday. The car came to a stop on a table drain which caused oil to leak from the vehicle. IN OTHER NEWS: The man returned to the scene on Sunday to collect the car and police and firefighters attended. The Environment Protection Authority was also alerted due to the oil spill, which occurred about halfway between Chiltern and Beechworth.

NT Police investigating fatal motor vehicle incidents in Alice Springs, Howard Springs



Police say two people have died in separate motor vehicle incidents across the Northern Territory, including one in which a pedestrian was fatally struck by a car in a hospital carpark in Alice Springs.

Northern Territory Police alleged the woman was a victim of domestic violence and expect to charge a 49-year-old man with murder later today.

“The woman was sitting on the footpath next to the carpark area,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Megan Blackwell.

“The vehicle has rammed a female, that female has been caught underneath and been dragged for a short distance before becoming dislodged.”

Police say the incident happened around 9:45pm.

Hospital staff immediately attended the scene and transferred the woman to the emergency department but she died a short time later.

Police say the car believed to have been involved in the alleged hit-and-run was a “commonly-known” vehicle in the Alice Springs area and have urged anyone who may have witnessed or filmed the incident to come forward.

“The vehicle was a green Ford Falcon with West Coast Eagles stickers along the side of it,” said Det. Snr Sgt Blackwell.

“If anyone has seen it in the earlier hours of January 7, if they could come forward and let us know the movements of that vehicle.”

Investigators say they believe there was a passenger in the car earlier in the day and would like to speak to that person.

The passenger is not considered to be facing any charges, but police say might be able to assist with investigations.

In a separate incident, a man died following a motorcycle crash in Darwin’s rural area.

Police say they were notified of the crash on Gunn Point Road at Howard Springs about 6:45am this morning.

The road was closed between Sitella Road and Willard Road while emergency services attended.

The death of the pedestrian will not be recorded on the NT’s road toll because the incident took place in a public car park, not on a road.

Federal Prosecutors Investigating Trump’s Role In Inciting Capitol Attack

U.S. Attorney for the District of Washington, D.C. Michael Sherwin told reporters Thursday that President Trump is among those being investigated for their role in inciting an attack on the U.S. Capitol Wednesday that saw a mob of the president’s supporters storm the building.

Sherwin said his office is looking at “all actors here, not only the people that went into the building,” including “others that maybe assisted or facilitated or played some ancillary role in this,” the Washington Post reported.

Asked by reporters if  Trump is being investigated, Sherwin reiterated that investigators are “looking at all actors here,” stating, “anyone that had a role, if the evidence fits the element of a crime, they’re going to be charged.”

Shortly before his supporters stormed the Capitol, Trump delivered a speech to the mob regurgitating the false claims of voter fraud that fueled them and urging them to “fight like hell,” because, if they don’t, “you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

The president also instructed the crowd to “walk down Pennsylvania Avenue” and go to the Capitol to “give our Republicans, the weak ones… the boldness they need to take back our country,” falsely promising he would “be there with you.”

Trump tweeted numerous times during the attack, initially calling for Pence to overturn the election before making various statements advocating peace but also reiterating his false claims of a stolen election.

Trump was warned by White House counsel Pat Cipollone that he could have legal exposure related to the attack, according to the New York Times.

Others who could come under scrutiny are Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, who called for a “trial by combat” during a speech to the crowd, and first son Donald Trump Jr., who said Republicans in Congress “better fight for Trump, because if they’re not… I’m gonna be in your backyard in a couple months.”

Sherwin said prosecutors plan to prioritize those perpetrators of destructive or violent acts at the Capitol – who he called “the closest alligators to the boat” – and said the Department of Justice and FBI are expediently pursuing cases against and charging rioters.

India investigating potential bubble breach by Test stars at Melbourne restaurant Secret Kitchen


An India fan, Navaldeep Singh, posted footage on social media of the group at the restaurant, claiming he had paid the $118.69 bill for the players. He had claimed Pant had hugged him but issued a “clarification” on Twitter late Saturday afternoon saying social distancing had been maintained.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is reviewing the video after being alerted to it by this masthead. A spokesman for the BCCI declined to comment further.

CA issued a statement on Saturday night, saying the two boards were “investigating the matter and seeking to determine whether the outing constitutes a breach of biosecurity protocols”.

There is no suggestion the restaurant has acted inappropriately.

Any disciplinary action for the group will be up to the BCCI, with CA essentially powerless to hand out any sanctions for a breach of its protocols as the players are not its employees.

The players have been isolated from the rest of the touring party as a “precaution” on the advice of the Indian and Australian medical teams, CA said in the statement.

Similar measures were taken in the Big Bash League after Brisbane Heat pair Chris Lynn and Dan Lawrence had failed to comply with biosecurity protocols for the event. They were cleared to play in Brisbane’s next game but were required to prepare separately and not take part in team huddles or celebrations.

“This will include separating the group of players from the broader Indian and Australian squads when travelling and at the training venue,” the CA statement said.

“Players will be permitted to train in accordance with the strict protocols that have been put in place to ensure the ongoing safety of all members of the Indian and Australian squads.”

Players and staff from the Australia and India sides have strict conditions on their movement as part of measures to minimise the chances of the lucrative series being affected by any COVID-19 outbreak. They are allowed to eat out, but must be seated outdoors.

The two sides are due to fly to Sydney on Monday where they will be subjected to even tighter restrictions in order to satisfy Queensland health authorities for entry to that state for the fourth Test.

Singh also published pictures of players carrying shopping, including one of wicketkeeper Pant with a Valentino bag. The brand has a store at Chadstone. Players, however, are allowed to shop via click and collect with face masks to be worn indoors.

Singh’s video had been viewed more than 267,000 times on Twitter at 10pm (AEDT) on Saturday and his story published in Indian media.

CA’s biosecurity measures are designed in part to protect players from contracting the coronavirus and spreading it through the hub, but also to reduce their likelihood of being caught up in a venue later to be deemed a hotspot, potentially affecting their ability to travel interstate should state borders close.

Queensland is monitoring the situation in NSW and Victoria, the latter recording 10 new local cases of coronavirus on Saturday.

Queensland chief health officer Jeannette Young and Health Minister Yvette D’Ath have urged Queenslanders to reconsider their need to travel to NSW and Victoria.

The Queensland border is shut to NSW but remains open to Victoria, with the issue to be reviewed on January 8. Should it also close to Victoria, broadcasters will face further difficulties moving their staff into NSW.

“While we’re not changing any restrictions to NSW and Victoria at this stage, as we’ve seen things can change really quickly with this virus, so I continue to urge Queenslanders travelling to these states to reassess their plans – if it is not necessary, then consider staying here,” Dr Young said on Friday.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Saturday made masks compulsory and imposed new restrictions as its coronavirus cluster expanded by seven.

The Premier banned dancing and singing at night clubs while restricting numbers at gym classes, weddings, funerals and places of worship.

However, the Test between Australia and India, scheduled to begin on Thursday, will go ahead with attendance at 50 per cent capacity.

“We consider health and safety first and foremost, but we also need to think about wellbeing and jobs and the economy,” Berejiklian said.

“And that’s why by putting these measures and settings in place we are confident we can continue to increase and encourage economic activity, give confidence to business and jobs, but also, of course, keep the virus at bay.”

CA cracked down on Heat pair Lynn and Lawrence and the club for bubble breaches after the duo boarded cabs on a night out in Canberra last month.

The club was fined $50,000, $20,000 of which was suspended for the rest of this season’s Big Bash League, while the players were each fined $10,000, with $4000 suspended.

Penrith Panthers star Brent Naden given one-month ban for positive cocaine test, NRL investigating bubble breach


Naden was sanctioned under new the World Anti-Doping Code’s new rules for 2021, which permit a one-month suspension for athletes who can prove the drug was taken recreationally. The athlete also must commit to undertaking a rehab program to qualify for the reduced suspension.

Naden did not contest the positive sample but told Sports Integrity Australia he took the drug the day ahead of the grand final, which aligned with the low levels found in his sample.

Sports Integrity Australia came to the conclusion Naden would have not taken the drugs so far in advance if he had taken them to improve his performance in the grand final.

His ban was backdated to the day his provisional suspension was handed down on December 1, leaving Naden free to return to training and competition from January 1.

Penrith chief executive Brian Fletcher said Naden was expected to return to pre-season training next week.

The Panthers do not expect any heavy sanctions to come from the potential bubble breach and are happy for him to return to training while that investigation is ongoing.

“Our club acknowledges the penalty handed to Brent Naden by the NRL in relation to his use of a recreational drug,” he said. “Brent has come to understand the significant impact of his actions on his family, our club and the game of rugby league.

“He similarly understands how fortunate he is to have the opportunity to return to the NRL in 2021.”

The Panthers are also unhappy at suggestions in the media they were aware of Naden’s drug use before choosing to play him on grand final day, with the club considering its legal options.
