Brisbane reportedly faces a big-money battle to keep gun centre Kotoni Staggs beyond this year.
Staggs was a shining light for the Broncos last year in a horrible season, making a name for himself as one of the competition’s premier centres and casting himself in NSW Blues selection discussions.
He’s currently sidelined with injury but the Courier Mail reports three NRL rivals are desperately trying to lure him away from Red Hill with offers of big cash.

It’s reported Staggs could be offered as much as $800,000 a season by a rival such as the Titans, who stole gun backrower David Fifita away from Brisbane already.
The Eels and Bulldogs are the other two clubs linked to Staggs, who is off contract at the end of this season.
“I don’t want to lose Kotoni,” coach Kevin Walters told the Courier Mail.

“I understand there is interest in him but I see him as a 10-year player for the Broncos and it’s up to me to provide the right environment where he feels comfortable with what he is doing.
“He is a super player and we will fight hard to keep him at the Broncos.”
At the same time, the same newspaper reports Brisbane is in the market to poach young playmaker-fullback Scott Drinkwater from North Queensland.

Drinkwater will be the Cowboys’ five-eighth this season but he’s being pursued by rival clubs for next year, including the Broncos who see him as a potential replacement for Anthony Milford.
Milford is Brisbane’s highest paid player but certainly hasn’t earned his money in recent seasons, at times being considered lucky to remain in the team at all.
Drinkwater would come at a considerably lower price and could slot into the halves alongside young gun halfback Tom Dearden.

Thank you for stopping by and reading this article regarding the latest Australian Sports news items titled “NRL contracts, news: Kotoni Staggs, Scott Drinkwater, Broncos signing, Cowboys, Titans, salary”. This news article was posted by My Local Pages Australia as part of our local and national news services.
Young gun Brisbane Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs will test his value on the NRL’s open market next week with rival clubs tipped to need in excess of $700,000 a season to convince him to leave Red Hill.
Staggs, 22, is regarded among the most damaging young centres in the NRL and was consistently one of the Broncos’ best players despite a lean 2020 for the club.
The Broncos centre is expected to be ruled out until at least Round 10 this year after undergoing off-season surgery on an ACL injury sustained in Round 20 last year.

But the injury issue won’t stop rival NRL clubs from pitching to convince free agent Staggs to sign with them for 2022.
Staggs’ agent, Isaac Moses, has emailed clubs asking them to signal interest in speaking with the Broncos centre via Zoom next week.
Haas embarrassed & ashamed after arrest

Moses is set to be deregistered by the NRL but is still allowed to go about business as usual until the NRL Appeals Tribunal hands down a final verdict on how long he is rubbed out for.
To convince Staggs to even consider leaving the Broncos, rival clubs are expected to need to offer in excess of $700,000 per season.
Staggs was signed by the Broncos as a teenager playing for Wellington in country NSW and scored 10 tries in 14 NRL appearances last year to be Brisbane’s top tryscorer.
New Brisbane coach Kevin Walters views the X-factor centre as a huge part of the Broncos plans beyond this season and aims to retain the Wellington junior.

“Kotoni was probably the Broncos best player last season and we certainly see him as being a crucial part of our future plans at Brisbane,” Walters said.
“We understand players may want to test their value on the market but we’re also very confident with what the Broncos can offer as a club.”

As always, Staggs isn’t the only young gun player on the Broncos’ roster who has caught the attention of rival clubs.
Xavier Coates handled the State of Origin arena on debut for Queensland last year and has already met with Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy and new Nroth Queensland coach Todd Payten about 2022.

The Gold Coast Titans have also recently expressed an interest in signing Coates.
Then there is young gun backrowers Jordan Rikki – who made his NRL debut last year – and Brendan Piakura, both guaranteed to be heavily targeted by rival clubs.
Walters told Fox Sports the Broncos will be fighting hard to retain their young gun talent.
“We want to keep all of them,” the Broncos coach said.

KEVVIE LOOKS FOR STAGGS’ REPLACEMENT
Walters faces the first half of his debut season at the helm without star centre Kotoni Staggs who isn’t expected to return from an ACL injury until Round 13.
Walters has already started preparations with shifting young gun Tesi Niu to the centres during pre-season.
Niu played six NRL games for Brisbane last season — four of those at fullback and two off the bench.
After impressing in those six games it was expected he’d inherit Darius Boyd’s No.1 jersey in 2021 however Staggs’ injury in the final round of last season has forced Walters to rethink things.
Niu stands at 177cm and weighs 90kg — it’s understood he’s bulked up over the off-season and is quite powerful in both attack and defence.

Walters told Foxsports.com.au that although Niu will spend a lot of time at right centre during pre-season he’ll likely see some games at fullback too.
“He’ll be training in the centres and a bit of fullback — he’ll probably be used in both of those positions. It’s good for his development to train in different positions,” Walters said.
“That’s what pre-season is all about, to get them familiar with their positions and different situations that they find themselves in, both in defence and attack.
“He’s a guy with great athletic ability, so we’re very happy with his progress. Obviously he has a long way to go but very happy with what he’s been doing so far in our pre-season.”
“I feel he can be good in both positions. We see that with a lot of players where they can cover multiple positions and Tesi that style of player.
“Just for the moment we’re parking him in that right centre position — doesn’t mean he’s going to stay there — and we know he’s had some good games at fullback as well in the Intrust Super Cup. We’re happy to have him on board and we’re just working on those areas that he needs improving in.”

Niu won’t be the only player to be tested in a new position. Walters says he’ll do that with more players throughout pre-season so he can both learn more about each player’s strengths and weaknesses and to determiner where they excel at.
“Yes (will shift more players around) because I’m a little bit unfamiliar with a lot of them and their skills so that’s what this time is about as well, letting them express themselves in different positions and letting all of the coaches and performance staff have a look at them in different scenarios across the field.”
Utility back Jamayne Isaako has been training at fullback. The 24-year-old had an injury scare at training on Wednesday, however Walters says it’s nothing to be worried about.
“He did it before Christmas as well, he just irked an old injury. It’s not anything dramatic, he might miss a few more days of training but we expect to see him back before too long.”
Emotional Pearce relinquishes captaincy

Isaako was quiet last season — he only appeared 10 times for the Broncos. However, 2021 could be a different story with the 2018 Dally M Rookie of the Year springing to Walters’ mind first when asked who had really stood out during pre-season.
While Walters won’t give any hints on who will partner Anthony Milford in the halves he did mention that both candidates — Tom Deardan and Brodie Croft — have both impressed him at training.
As for the Broncos’ young but hugely talented forward pack, Tevita Pangai Junior “has been one of the better ones.”
Pangai Jnr had a tumultuous 2020 season. The 24-year-old was busted breaking the bubble while attending a barber shop opening. In August he was stood down without pay for the remainder of the season, and fined $30,000 by the NRL.

BIRD PREPARES FOR POSITIONAL SWITCH
New Dragons recruit Jack Bird is keen to click the reset button on his career and it looks like that will involve a new position.
Bird was tipped to play lock in 2021 — a position he’s been keen to play ever since he first joined the Broncos in 2018 — however Wide World of Sports reports the 25-year-old has been training on an edge.
“Jack has the makings of a top back-rower. He may start the year in the backs but we see him as a very dangerous edge runner,” a Dragons source told WWOS.

STAR TITANS RECRUIT EYES NO.13 JERSEY
After signing back in 2019, premiership-winner Tino Fa’asuamaleaui is finally a Titan and the State of Origin star has his sights set on filling the void Jai Arrow has left.
Arrow was the Titans’ most impressive and consistent forwards. His departure has left the No.13 jersey up for grabs and Fa’asuamaleaui wants to make it his.

“There is a lot of competition here and it is good competition and I have still got to work hard to try and get that spot,” he told reporters on Tuesday.
“Obviously it is one of my goals to try and get that number thirteen (jersey).
“Especially coming a bit late in the pre-season I have got to go that extra length to try and seal that spot.
“My goal is to get that thirteen and he (Arrow) did a really good job there for years and I want to do a good job there too if I do get the jersey.
“I would be excited if I did.”

LIFE AFTER CAPTAIN CAM
Ryan Papenhuyzen has backed the Bromwich brothers Kenny and Jesse to become the next Storm captains.
With Cameron Smith not attending Melbourne’s pre-season camp in Geelong, talk turned to who might become the next Storm skipper.
“The two that stand out are the Bromwich brothers,” Papenhuyzen said.
“They’ve been here for a while. They’re not going to lead like Cam, they’re going to lead like they are. Our whole group respects them. It’s about adjusting to other leadership styles.
“Kenny Bromwich is really calm and he strikes me as one of those people, it’s just that sort of aura and Kenny’s got that.
“There’s a few others but he really stands out.”

Meanwhile, Papenhuyzen revealed how impressed he was by the competition for places at fullback.
Nicho Hynes is Papenhuyzen’s established deputy, but the Storm No.1 said he liked what he saw from tribalist Michael Purcell, a winger or fullback nicknamed the ‘Kangaroo Catcher’.
“It’s pretty competitive with Nicho, he’s really talented,” Papenhuyzen added. “Little Purcs has come down from Brisbane and he’s an unbelievable talent. He reminds me of Josh Addo-Carr a bit.
“There’s a few other boys who don’t have a position but are willing to learn to play wing or fullback. Having them come into the squad has been refreshing and I’m able to share my experiences with them.”
Thank you for dropping in to My Local Pages and reading this post about League news and updates named “NRL 2021: pre-season training updates, Tesi Niu at centre, Brisbane Broncos, Kotoni Staggs injury, Kevin Walters, Melbourne Storm captain, Cameron Smith, Ryan Papenhuyzen”. This news release was brought to you by My Local Pages as part of our Australian news services.
The Brisbane Broncos had a rough 2020 and unless next year is better, they could be facing the prospect of losing one of their best players.
So often associated with consistent success, Brisbane’s collapse this season has seen them consider mass player movements.
Red Hill is no longer as desirable a location as it was previously and Kevin Walters will be desperate to turn that around in 2021.

Otherwise, Kotoni Staggs could be lost to the club.
Staggs is off-contract at the end of next season with a player option in his favour moving forward.
“I know that several clubs are keen on signing their superstar centre Kotoni Staggs,” rugby league media legend Peter Peters said on the Big Sports Weekend.
“Staggs is their gun player, he’s going to demand a lot of money when his current contract is up at the end of next season and Staggs is the player other clubs want to pinch from the Broncos.
“He’s an ex-Wellington, NSW junior, he’ll be sought after by all the clubs that are cashed up.”

Kotoni Staggs had a breakout 2020. Picture: Brett CostelloSource: News Corp Australia
It is no surprise he is a man in demand. Staggs impressed in an otherwise dismal season for the Broncos with 10 tries, 12 linebreaks and 47 tackle busts from just 14 games.
His defence is still a work in progress but the effort is clearly there as evident in try-saving efforts such as that on Ronaldo Mulitalo in a late loss to Cronulla.
Then there is his obvious game-changing ability, which was on display when he sent Euan Aitken flying to the ground with a brutal fend before running 60 metres to score an insane individual try against the Dragons.
Put simply, Staggs is the kind of player the Broncos cannot afford to lose.
He was on the verge of State of Origin selection before a devastating, season-ending injury.
“He’ll be the prime buy of next season and as I said Kevin Walters will struggle to keep him, especially if they have a repeat of 2020,” Peters added.
“Staggs is on the cusp of NSW and Australian selection and will want to be with a successful side.”

The Daily Telegraph’s Dean Ritchie said the fact Brisbane may lose Staggs is indicative of just how devastating this season’s last-placed finish has been.
“It is funny. Players like Staggs in previous years would never leave the Broncos,” he said.
“It was successful, it was glamorous, it had everything. You wanted to play for the Broncos. Now, they are struggling. They are wooden spooners.
“People want to leave the Broncos.”

THE SILVER LINING TO BURTON’S DEPARTURE
Penrith were left frustrated this week after it was confirmed that young playmaker Matt Burton would be leaving at the end of 2021 for the Bulldogs.
A Dubbo product, the Panthers had worked hard to bring Burton to Penrith and through their development system, transforming him into an NRL-ready player.
But unless he was on board with playing either in the centres or as a ball-playing forward, Burton had no place in the halves stuck behind Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai.
At the Bulldogs though, he will form an exciting combination alongside Kyle Flanagan.
It is a hard reality the Panthers, along with many other NRL clubs, have to face within the current salary cap.
However, there could be a silver lining for Penrith which meant the departure of Burton simply had to happen.

“The only problem they’ve got is they have to re-sign or upgrade Yeo, Luai and Crichton and they might need that money Burton takes up,” Ritchie said.
“They’ve already got rid of Josh Mansour to free up some coin because Crichton wants a fairly hefty pay rise.”
Penrith are adamant on keeping Burton for 2021 given he is a strong back-up option if either one of Cleary and Luai get injured.
However, Ritchie pointed out that while that may be the case, the temptation will be there to let him leave early if it means freeing up more cash for priority re-signings.
“I don’t think they want to let him go but it may come down to dollars and cents,” he said.
An 18-year-old woman accused of circulating an explicit video of Brisbane Broncos player Kotoni Staggs has been fined $600.
McKenzie Robinson pleaded guilty to one count of distributing a prohibited visual recording in the Brisbane Magistrates court this morning after the footage was released online without the 21-year-old player’s consent.
The court heard the pair met on Instagram in June and agreed to meet at Ms Robinson’s home.
The court was told Mr Staggs and Ms Robinson had consensual sex and both consented to recording the act provided it stayed between the pair.
Ms Robinson’s lawyer said she had sent the video to a “trusted” friend who circulated the video to a sporting club, the media and online.

Magistrate Tina Previtera said there was evidence Ms Robinson did not mean for the video to be “widely” circulated.
“The evidence before the court supports that this person to whom you sent the recording, was the person who distributed it more widely,” she said.
“I’m satisfied there is no evidence of intentional or spiteful behaviour on your part to cause the victim the damage that has been caused.
“I do hope this is a lesson to you and all other people involved in this kind of behaviour on social media, that it is highly destructive.
“This recording is derogatory of more than just the victim.”
When sentencing Ms Robinson Magistrate Previtera said she took into consideration her early plea, her lack of criminal history and her young age.
“A plea is evidence of remorse, it’s evidence of you taking responsibility of your conduct,” she said.
Broncos star Kotoni Staggs has spoken publicly for the first time since his season was derailed by a sex tape police matter.
The 21-year-old was a shining light for the Broncos on the field this season as the club crashed to its worst ever year, but off the field was engulfed in a revenge porn storm.
McKenzie Lorraine Robinson, 18, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court last month charged with distributing the illegal footage.
The teenager stands accused of sharing footage of herself engaged in an intimate act with the star Broncos centre between June 14 and August 5 without his consent.
The matter is now scheduled to appear before the court again on October 16.
Staggs was cleared of any wrongdoing by the NRL’s integrity unit after the video was released and has commended Queensland police for their handling of the matter.
Now Staggs has revealed to The Courier-Mail he has been left “embarrassed”
“It wasn’t my fault (the video leaked), but I was still involved,” Staggs said.
“I was embarrassed it came out. I didn’t want my family to see it, that was the one thing that I was worried about. I didn’t really want to tell them but I had to.
“They actually took it really well. They stuck by my side. They had my back through it all. I was surprised by how well they took it and that made me feel a bit better.
“There’s always ups and downs. You learn from your mistakes.”
Staggs also said he is ready to move on with his life while McKenzie Lorraine Robinson will return to court this month.
“She is doing what she has to do now and is facing court,” he said.
“Whatever happens, happens.”
A painful ACL injury in the Broncos final game of the season has cost Staggs his potential State of Origin debut for NSW with the Broncos star forced to go under the knife this off-season. The surgery will keep him sidelined for nine months.
It came after Blues coach Brad Fittler indicated Staggs was in line to be selected in his preliminary squad for this year’s Origin series.
Teenage woman McKenzie Lorraine Robinson has fronted a Brisbane Court for the first time over her alleged involvement in the sex tape drama that has engulfed Brisbane Broncos star Kotoni Staggs.
The 18-year-old woman’s lawyer on Thursday spoke to reporters when leaving the Brisbane Magistrates Court to declare his client is not responsible for the alleged revenge porn video being spread across the internet last month.
Staggs was interviewed by the NRL Integrity Unit at the time and was immediately cleared to continue playing for the Broncos after he reported the matter to police.
Robinson’s lawyer Jason Jacobson made the dramatic claim after the hearing was adjourned until September 30, that his client was not responsible for the video being posted on social media.
“It was not Ms Robinson that made this private video go public,” Mr Jacobson said.
“That was never intended by her and she very much regrets the impact it’s caused to Mr Staggs.
“There is an explanation as to how this happened and that will be put to the court at a later date.”
The Courier-Mail reported Staggs and Robinson met after she is reported to have contacted him via Instagram earlier this year.
21-year-old centre Staggs has continued to be among the club’s best players in recent weeks, despite the sex tape drama surrounding him.
The Broncos released a statement in August confirming their star centre had become embroiled in a sex tape drama.
“The Brisbane Broncos have been made aware of a video recording involving Kotoni Staggs being circulated on social media,” the statement claimed.
“The video is of a highly personal nature and has been released without his consent.
“The club is working closely with the NRL Integrity Unit, having alerted it as soon as becoming aware of the issue.”
Brisbane Broncos young gun Kotoni Staggs has called out the club’s leadership group for not doing their job amid a chaotic 2020 season.
Currently sitting 15th on the NRL ladder, the struggling club has dominated headlines as several off-field scandals accentuate a dire season on the field, where they have only registered one victory since the coronavirus lockdown.
Rumours of tension among the squad’s leadership group have circulated for several weeks, with veteran Darius Boyd reportedly quitting the group earlier this month.
Speaking on NITV’s Over the Black Dot, Staggs condemned his squad’s senior players for not stepping up when they’re desperately needed.
“There’s some boys there in leadership that are not really doing their job, and I think there’s a lot of young boys in there that are getting away with a bit,” Staggs said.
“We need some leaders there to step up and to show us young boys what it’s about.”
Staggs had been a standout performer for Brisbane this season, managing seven tries and nine linebreaks in eight appearances — he missed a handful of games due to a hamstring injury along with a high-shot suspension.
The 21-year-old Tongan international boasts 119 tackles and 29 tackle breaks during the 2020 premiership to date.
Although he’s only playing in his third NRL season, Staggs has made an effort to ramp up his leadership among the squad.
“We’ve got some good leaders at the moment, myself included, I’m trying to be the best leader at the club for the young boys,” Staggs said.
“I’m young myself but I’ve got a voice and I’m trying to use it.”
Staggs became embroiled in a revenge porn scandal after a video featuring the star centre was leaked earlier this month. The Courier Mail reported 18-year-old McKenzie Robinson was charged over the alleged incident.
On Tuesday, the Broncos were fined $140,000 for their disastrous Everley Park Hotel quarantine breach, in which 10 players were spotted breaking the NRL’s strict biosecurity rules.
Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold is isolating in Sydney after leaving the club’s quarantine bubble to tend to a family matter, and vile rumours about his personal life have circulated around social media.
“It’s disappointing, more embarrassing, it’s been the story of the year,” Carrigan told Fox League.
“We play for 40 minutes then we choose not to show up and take short cuts.
“It’s not good enough, it’s not first grade standard. There’s a lot of talk about potential, but potential has to be turned into performances. We’re our own worst enemy at the moment.”
For their next fixture, Brisbane will face the St. George Illawarra Dragons on Friday evening, and risk slipping to bottom spot on the NRL ladder is they suffer another loss.
Kotoni Staggs is free to play this week after being interviewed by the NRL Integrity Unit over a revenge porn video that was distributed on Tuesday.
It’s been reported the video was leaked by a woman known to the Broncos centre without his consent. The Courier Mail reports Staggs is exploring his legal options over the incident, which triggered a complaint to Queensland Police.
At training on Wednesday, Staggs’ teammates cheered him onto the field. Channel 7 reporter Chris Garry tweeted: “The Broncos team just cheered Staggs on to the training field as if he was playing a milestone game. That’s one way to make it less awkward.”
Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold said Staggs has done nothing wrong and will be available for selection against South Sydney on Friday night.
“My understanding is there is nothing Kotoni has done wrong. I don’t want to prejudice anything further there, I will leave it to the NRL to handle,” Seibold said.
“Kotoni has had an interview with the Integrity Unit this morning. As a club and as his coach, I have no further comment to make, he has done that this morning and we will leave it to the integrity unit to handle going forward.
“It’s really challenging for Kotoni.
“I don’t want to draw too much attention to the case because I don’t think it’s the right thing to do, but Kotoni’s welfare is at the forefront of what we are trying to do.
“He will play, he is excited about playing on Friday night and we will put some support around him there.”
Channel 9’s Ben Dobbin reported on Triple M this morning the video had “come through clubland in the NRL”.
“This was done in November last year and it came from a rival NRL club so somebody has sent it to a player,” Dobbin said.
“In some ways you could say is it revenge? Is it sabotage? What is it about?”
In a statement on Tuesday, Staggs’ club said: “The Brisbane Broncos have been made aware of a video recording involving Kotoni Staggs being circulated on social media.
“The video is of a highly personal nature and has been released without his consent.
“The club is working closely with the NRL Integrity Unit, having alerted it as soon as becoming aware of the issue.”
