“Just the knee plugged. The ground’s horrendous, it’s soft, so you’ve got to be a bit more careful than that,” Larkin said.

“I probably should have known better but in the moment you try to make the play. I just went straight through the surface. It’s pretty spongy. You’ll probably see a bit more of that if there’s more games here.

“I’m still standing, but maybe a heavier guy does a bit more damage to himself. I guess it’s safe enough, but it’s not ideal.”

Larkin posted a half-century but it wasn’t enough as the Stars were stunned by a brilliant 45 not out from Renegades youngster Mackenzie Harvey, who led his side to a five-wicket win with two balls to spare.

“It’s one of the best wins I’ve been a part of. They always seem to happen against the Stars, which is nice. It was just a great win overall in the end,” Harvey said.

“It was nice to get a few out of the middle. It’s just one of those games where everything sort of paid off in the end. It was just our night, in the end.”

The result was the Renegades’ third win of the season, meaning they remain a slim chance to avoid the wooden spoon. The Stars now have little margin for error if they are to qualify for the finals in a tightly-packed ladder.

Sheffield Shield, Tim Paine stumping, Nick Larkin, NSW Blues vs Tasmania


A moment of pure genius by Australian Test captain Tim Paine was required to remove New South Wales batsman Nick Larkin in the Sheffield Shield on Tuesday.

Facing the Tasmanian Tigers at Gladys Elphick Park in Adelaide, Larkin plundered his fourth first-class century to set up a tantalising conclusion to the four-day encounter.

The 30-year-old’s innings included 22 boundaries, but came to an abrupt and unusual end in the 98th over.

With Larkin on 161, Tasmania paceman Gabe Bell delivered a jaffa to beat the outside edge, leaving the Blues opener in a tangle.

Larkin checked the shot and held the forward defence, unaware he had not grounded the heel of his back foot behind the crease.

Paine quickly saw an opportunity to underarm the ball, hitting the stumps before the batsman could return to safety, a rare stumping which wicketkeepers have often attempted with little success.

Because Larkin was not attempting a run when the bails were dismantled, the wicket goes down in the scorecard as a stumping rather than a run out — much to Bell’s desire.

A dejected Larkin had to make his way back to the pavilion, 14 runs short of his highest score in first-class cricket.

Former Australian spin bowler Brad Hogg tweeted: “Paine’s me to say it, but the white line is not a strip of zinc to protect the grass from sunburn batsmen. Nothing wrong here. I’m stumped and still Larkin over Tasmania not mankading the non striker in the incident.”

Blues all-rounders Moises Henriques and Sean Abbott each compiled centuries before New South Wales declared their innings at 6/522 with a lead of 348.

Considering they were bowled out for 64 on day one, it’s been a remarkable resurgence from the Blues side, who are now in a winning position in the round four fixture.
