European Super League: Uefa furious at 11 major clubs signing up to breakaway plans

Juventus and AC Milan have signed up to the breakaway league plans

Senior Uefa figures are furious that 11 major European clubs, including five from England, have signed up to a breakaway European Super League.

BBC Sport was told last week of plans for some sort of confirmation about a European Super League.

Uefa hoped to head off plans with a new-look 36-team Champions League set to be confirmed on Monday.

Uefa said it will use “all measures available” to stop the “cynical project” of a breakaway Super League.

The European governing body released a joint statement together with the English Football Association, Premier League Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), La Liga, and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) as well as Serie A on Sunday.

They said they will “remain united” in trying to stop the breakaway, using both judicial and sporting measures if required.

They also reiterated Fifa’s stance that players taking part in the Super League would be banned from all other competitions at domestic, European or world level and could be prevented from representing their national teams.

In a separate statement, the Premier League said it condemned the proposal as it “attacks the principles of open competition and sporting merit which are at the heart” of domestic and European football.

Juventus owner Andrea Agnelli, Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and AC Milan chief executive Ivan Gazidis would all have had a significant input into the Champions League discussions on Friday.

However, it appears those clubs are among those to have broken ranks, to the fury of Uefa, whose president Aleksander Ceferin wanted to stave off a Super League threat.

Spanish La Liga sides Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also part of the 11-team group, as are Italian Serie A club Inter Milan.

None of the clubs concerned have responded to questions about the proposals.

The Premier League said a European Super League would “destroy” the dream of fans that “their team may climb to the top and play against the best”.

It added such a league would “undermine the appeal of the whole game” and that they would work with the FA, the English Football League, Professional Footballers’ Association, League Managers Association and fans to “defend the integrity and future prospects of English football”.

The FA said it will “not provide permission to any competition that would be damaging to English football” and will “take any legal and/or regulatory action necessary” to stop it.

Bundesliga sides are opposed to the plans because the German model means commercial investors cannot have more than a 49% stake in clubs, so fans hold a majority of their own voting rights.

It is understood French Ligue 1 side Paris St-Germain are not part of the 11-team group.

Uefa said it thanked “those clubs in other countries, especially the French and German clubs, who have refused to sign up” to the breakaway league.

“We call on all lovers of football, supporters and politicians, to join us in fighting against such a project if it were to be announced,” they added.

“This persistent self-interest of a few has been going on for too long. Enough is enough.”

Quite when the European Super League would start is unclear.

However, world governing body Fifa has already said it would not recognise such a competition and any players involved in it would be denied the chance to play at a World Cup.

Serie A have called an emergency board meeting to discuss the matter.

The Football Supporters’ Association said it is “totally opposed” to the plans, which it said were “motivated by nothing but cynical greed”.

They added: “This competition is being created behind our backs by billionaire club owners who have zero regard for the game’s traditions and continue to treat football as their personal fiefdom.”

It has been agreed the new-look Champions League will involve an initial phase where every club plays 10 matches each rather than the current group phase.

In addition there would be play-offs, followed by a knockout phase.

The most controversial aspect of the proposals surround the allocation of the four additional places, with two being reserved for the clubs ranked highest in Uefa’s co-efficient table who fail to qualify for the Champions League through their domestic competition, but do secure some kind of European football.

At the moment, Liverpool and Chelsea would be the clubs who benefited from that system if it was in place this season.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp faces questions on recruitment after Champions League exit to Real Madrid

Liverpool had chances at Anfield but their 3-1 loss in Madrid was enough to see them knocked out of the Champions League

Liverpool’s all-conquering season that brought them the club’s first league title in 30 years seemed an age away as they were eliminated by Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final at a deserted Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, who carried all before them in the league last season, are now left with only the Premier League’s top four – and a place in Europe’s elite competition next term – to aim for if they are to salvage something from this fragmented, disappointing, injury-hit campaign.

As Zinedine Zidane’s players celebrated a professional job that saw them set up a Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, Klopp was left to ponder Liverpool’s fall from grace in the past 12 months.

He will no doubt face calls from frustrated Reds fans to revamp a squad that has served him and the club magnificently in recent seasons – indeed the social media jury was already delivering that knee-jerk verdict moments after elimination.

The manager, quite rightly, will guard against over-reaction. Liverpool have achieved too much and have too many high-class players for that – but that does not mean he does not have serious questions to consider.

So does this Liverpool squad really need a major overhaul, or just minor renewal?

A team as good as Liverpool have been seems an unlikely candidate for an extensive rebuild – but fresh faces can create momentum, renewal and a new mood, and this group has been together a long time.

When Liverpool and Real met in the Champions League final in Kyiv in 2018, Klopp’s line-up included seven of those who started at Anfield on Wednesday.

Liverpool v Real Madrid
Liverpool are winless in their past five games against Real Madrid in the Champions League

And in those intervening three years Liverpool have continued to lean heavily on those seven starters from Kyiv on all fronts.

They have been carrying a very heavy workload for a long time and while the likes of Diogo Jota, who has been excellent, and Thiago Alcantara, who has not, have lightened the load in phases this season, Liverpool’s squad and best starting line-up still has a very familiar look to it. It is inevitable it has taken its toll.

Injuries have been the backdrop to all of Liverpool’s efforts this season and their inspirational leader – and one of the world’s finest central defenders – Virgil van Dijk is expected to be fit for the start of next season after the serious knee injury that has kept him out since September.

Joe Gomez, another fine talent, should also be back after a similar injury but there is no question a central defensive reinforcement is required. It remains to be seen whether it will be Ozan Kabak, currently on loan from Schalke, or RB Leipzig’s outstanding 24-year-old Ibrahima Konate. Nat Phillips has been excellent but Klopp needs more strength and quality.

Klopp has plenty of resources in midfield but Georginio Wijnaldum’s reluctance to sign a new contract points towards his departure while Jordan Henderson, still a huge influence at 30, has been sorely missed in his injury absences.

Thiago was meant to be a tempo-dictating game-changer after arriving from last season’s Champions League winners Bayern Munich but he has struggled, and it was significant that he did not start in either leg of this quarter-final when these looked like the sort of games he had been signed to play in.

Liverpool are relaxed about any speculation on Mohamed Salah’s future. The Egyptian is 29 in June but is still of such world class that he would command a huge fee. It would be a major shock if any situation developed where he left Anfield this summer.

The complications may arise if Liverpool fail to reach next season’s Champions League, a real possibility as they currently stand sixth, three points behind surprise package West Ham in fourth.

The idea of dropping into Europe’s lesser competitions may exercise the minds of the likes of Salah.

Jota has been a major success since his £45m summer arrival from Wolves and Liverpool will look to him to offer competition, respite and support for their main three forwards next season – although Roberto Firmino’s indifferent form means he may face a real fight for his place from the Portuguese.

But even if Liverpool do not finish in the Champions League places this is a time for measured judgements and careful recruitment, rather than for tearing down the monument to success that has brought Klopp and his players the European and domestic glory in the two preceding seasons.

Glenn Maxwell played a “momentum changing” knock as Royal Challengers Bangalore prevailed in a last-ball thriller against holders Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League opener played behind closed doors on Friday.

South Africa’s AB de Villiers hit a quickfire 48 while Maxwell batted at No.4 and made 39 from 28 balls which left his captain Virat Kohli pleased.

“We wanted Maxi to bat at four,” Kohli said. “The set-up was such that if we get a partnership, then Maxi comes into the game and he can do what he does.
