Parents jailed for torture and manslaughter of toddler daughter Maddilyn-Rose Ava Stokes

Maddilyn-Rose Ava Stokes was admitted to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane in May 2017 suffering from significant burns to more than a fifth of her body.

She suffered a cardiac arrest and died of sepsis shortly after.

In the Supreme Court in Brisbane on Friday, her father Shane David Stokes, 33, and her mother Nicole Betty Moore, 26, pleaded guilty to her torture and manslaughter.

Stokes also pleaded guilty to one count of grievous bodily harm.

During a sentencing hearing on Friday, the court heard Stokes admitted to holding the toddler under running hot water from a tap in the bathtub at their Northgate home, severely burning the girl’s legs, back, groin and buttocks.
