NRL Round 11 Odds and State Of Origin Betting Preview – 2021

With Queensland enforcer Josh Papalii in danger of missing Origin I, TAB has tightened the odds on the Blues both in the match and series.

Papalii faces a possible suspension for a high contact charge from the weekend’s action which has seen Queensland’s odds go from $2.25 out to $2.40 for Game I of the Origin series in Melbourne on June 9.

New South Wales are now $1.57 favourites having previously been $1.67 for the series opener. Despite Queensland’s heroics last year the Maroons are now $2.45 to retain the shield with the Blues at $1.53.

Following Magic Round, Penrith are into $2.75 to win the NRL premiership while this week’s opponent the Rabbitohs have drifted slightly from $5.50 to $6.00 and Manly have shortened again into $19.

Newcastle Knights, review of football department, Adam O’Brien, Anthony Seibold, Knights vs Wests Tigers

Jobs are on the line at the Newcastle Knights with the club set to undertake a major review after a disastrous loss to the Wests Tigers on Friday.

It comes after coach Adam O’Brien admitted there’s a losing culture at the club and will make sweeping changes to his team if that’s what is necessary to turn things around.

Phil Rothfield is reporting that no one is exempt from the review as he told Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast it will start from the very top and go all the way through the club.

“I spoke to (Knights CEO) Phil Gardner on Saturday morning about the situation and he’s renowned as one of the toughest administrators in the game,” Rothfield said.

“He’s about to start a review, a complete examination of the football department.

“It will start at Danny Buderus’ level as general manager of football and it will go right down to the physios, recruitment, the whole business.”

Gardner confirmed to News Corp he will be “reviewing everything” in a bid to combat the inconsistency that Newcastle have dealt with for the last few seasons.

“We’re reviewing everything. Right the way through from the front office down,” he said.

“We’ll look at all individuals and what they bring to the club. That includes culture, recruitment and physical performance and rehabilitation. We’re off the pace at the moment and need to fix it.

“The level of inconsistency at our club is far too high.

“We thought we could change it this year but we haven’t. Everyone’s got to get on board to fix that.

“There’s 14 clubs out there under pressure that need to lift to the level of Storm and Penrith and we’re one of them. There’s a big gap between second and everyone else.”

Rothfield pressed Gardner on the future of Anthony Seibold. The ex-Broncos coach was hired after a tumultuous time at Red Hill that ended just two seasons into what was meant to be a five-year tenure.

The CEO kept his cards relatively close to his chest but Rothfield believes Seibold could be on his way out.

“It was interesting when I asked him about Anthony Seibold because he was a very high profile addition to the Knights’ coaching team this year,” he said.

“(Gardner) told me he’s on a one-year contract so I don’t think ‘Seibs’ will be there next year.

“He just hasn’t had a lot of input. The way the team’s playing, they’ve probably gotten worse than last year.”

Newcastle haven’t been anywhere near the expectations of a club that boasts the likes of Kalyn Ponga, Mitchell Pearce and David Klemmer.

There was high hopes when O’Brien joined the club last year in his first head coaching gig. He had previously worked under supercoaches Craig Bellamy and Trent Robinson and was regarded the man that could take the Knights to a premiership.

O’Brien signed an extensions in February that will keep him at the club until the end of 2024 and Rothfield believes the coach’s job is safe.

He thinks, rather, the team is just simply lacking leadership.

Halfback Mitchell Pearce relinquished the captaincy after some off-field dramas. The club unveiled a five-man leadership group after that made up of Daniel Saifiti, Jayden Brailey, Kalyn Ponga, Blake Green and Mitch Barnett.

“It’s pretty obvious though their problems is instability in the spine. They haven’t had Ponga and Pearce at all this year together. They’ve got a young hooker in Jayden Brailey,” Rothfield said.

“I think they’ve got leadership problems with Mitchell not in the side.

“Jayden’s a really handy player and so is Daniel Saifiti but I don’t think when you stack them up, just their leadership qualifications against other clubs — the big clubs — they’re not quite there.”

Renouf Atoni contract, future, deal, off-contract, Bulldogs, Sharks, Dragons, Cowboys

The Bulldogs are at risk of losing one of their most impressive forwards as a number of clubs circle former junior Kiwi, Renouf Atoni.

The 25-year-old is off-contract and Foxsports.com.au understands the Sharks, Dragons and Cowboys have all registered interest in the barnstorming forward.

Atoni made his NRL debut for the Bulldogs in 2018 after coming up through the lower grades at the club.

His preference is to stay at Belmore but it’s understood the club is yet to table him an offer.

Atoni has featured in all nine of Canterbury’s games this season and will line up at lock against Canberra on Saturday.

He’s played 38 NRL games since his debut, with 2020 being a breakout year when he nailed down a regular spot in 17.

Tigers too good for timid Knights | 00:59

As a hard-running, ball-playing forward, Atoni has played one game this season at lock and one as a starting prop. For the rest, he’s provided the punch in Canterbury’s go-forward off the bench.

In the two games he has started this year, Atoni has certainly delivered. In Round 4, he ran for 118 metres, made one tacklebust and one offload, while in Round 5, he ran for 105 metres, made three tacklebusts, two offloads and one linebreak, as well as making 33 tackles — a game high for the Bulldogs.

His numbers off the bench are equally impressive. Atoni played 48 minutes in the Bulldogs’ win over the Sharks and notched up 101 run metres, one tacklebust and 27 tackles — zero missed. The following week he played 43 minutes off the bench against the Eels and recorded an impressive 148 run metres, three tacklebusts, one offload and 29 tackles.

Strict rules ‘are ruining the game’ | 05:15

And it seems he’s just hitting his straps. Atoni backed up those performances with another big one. He was the Dogs’ biggest metre-eater against the Dragons with 147, he also made four tacklebusts and 30 tackles.

The Sharks are looking to rebuild their roster under incoming coach Craig Ftizgibbon. Toby Rudolf has been linked to a move to the Bulldogs, which if he does, Atoni seems like the suitable workhorse replacement.

Meanwhile, the Dragons lose Cameron McInnes next season and Jack de Belin’s future is at this stage, still up in the air. Josh McGuire and Tyrell Fuimaono have been sharing the lock forward role, while Paul Vaughan and Blake Lawrie, are the current first choice props. But coach Anthony Griffin is an oldschool coach that has a real appreciation for players that roll up their sleeves and do the tough stuff — something Atoni could offer.

As for the Cowboys, Jason Taumalolo has a mortgage on the No.13 jersey but with Francis Molo heading to the Dragons next season, coach Todd Payten is on the hunt for a gun forward.

Anthony Milford contract, linked to the Gold Coast Titans, Brisbane Broncos, Jazz Tevaga, Bulldogs, Transfer whispers, signings

Anthony Milford’s future at the Broncos was already murky but now with the signing of Adam Reynolds set to be confirmed in the coming days, it leaves even bigger question marks over Milford.

Brisbane has already indicated that they have plans to play boom centre Kotoni Staggs at five-eighth. With Reynolds all but signed, Milford finds himself on the outer.

The 26-year-old has struggled with form the last two seasons. He has come under a tremendous amount of pressure as the playmaker on a multimillion-dollar deal, that simply hasn’t lived up to expectations.

Watch The 2021 NRL Telstra Premiership Live & On-Demand with No Ad-Breaks During Play. New to Kayo? > Get your 14-day free trial now & start streaming instantly >

Coach Kevin Walters swung the axe ahead of Round 6 and Milford was dropped to reserve grade for the first time in his career. Three weeks later he was recalled — but it’s been his rookie halves partner, Tyson Gamble who’s been stealing the show.

Milford’s $1 million-per-season deal expires at the end of 2021. There has been doubts over not only if he can land a new deal anywhere near that, but also if he could land a deal in the NRL at all.

Sam Walker inks 2 more years with Chooks | 01:36

But it seems Milford has got options — and he may not even have to leave Queensland.

Channel Sevenis reporting the Gold Coast Titans have “opened discussions” with Milford’s management.

It comes after it was revealed that the Sharks had turned their attention to Milford after losing hope on Reynolds.

The Titans see Milford as an option to replace Ash Taylor — another player that’s struggled under the pressure of a lucrative contract.

According to Seven, Taylor is willing to take a pay-cut to remain at the Titans but the club has indicated to him that they will look elsewhere.

The 26-year-old was a late scratching from last week’s game and was not named for Sunday’s clash with the undefeated Panthers. There’s been mixed messages around whether Taylor was dropped or has been recovering from a niggly hip injury.

Fifita to miss two weeks | 00:25

Titans coach Justin Holbrook has previously said he needs to see Taylor to keep improving before any contract talk can start.

“Taylor just needs to play well. It’s an obvious answer but it’s true,” he said.

“He is getting better every week and we just need him to keep improving and keep working hard.”

WARRIOR OPEN TO CHANGE

Utility forward Jazz Tevaga is hopeful of staying with the Warriors but has confirmed he has had interest from rival clubs.

It comes after it was reported that the Bulldogs were keen on the 25-year-old’s services.

While Tevaga would like to stay put, he is well aware that rugby league is a cutthroat industry and he only has so many years in the game to make money.

“There’s been interest from other clubs but nothing’s been finalised yet, that’s all I’ll say,” Tevaga told reporters on Wednesday.

“I know this is a business first and I’ll go where I see a good opportunity or where the money is right but I really hope we can sort a deal out here.

“I really just want what’s fair.”

Get all the latest NRL news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

Off-contract Tevaga has come up through the ranks at the Warriors before making his NRL debut in 2016.

He’s gone on to play another 77 games and in 2018 was named the Dally M Interchange Person of the Year. The memories he’s made at the club are not lost on him.

“Obviously money plays a crucial part in it, but I really want to stay at the Warriors,” he said.

“I love the Warriors and I love where we’re headed, I love the coaching staff and the team.”

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canterbury Bulldogs Preview

St George Illawarra Dragons have lost their last 3 games but get a much easier assignment this week.

They host the bottom of the ladder Canterbury Bulldogs at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Sunday and have opened as clear favourites.

Not sure I’d be taking short odds on the Dragons in their current form but I can’t back the Bulldogs either. Dragons to win.

Market Update:

There hasn’t been any really betting action on this match with the Dragons going into the game as the short priced favourites at $1.31 and have been pretty steady throughout betting.

The Bulldogs are at $3.50 and despite holding their price haven’t really had much support since markets opened on Monday.

Ex-NRL star Tony Williams has apologised for shaming the victim of Jarryd Hayne’s sexual assault case following huge backlash to his Instagram post that included two of his contracts being torn up.
