Murder probe in melbourne’s Oakleigh South after death of man

A 40-year-old man has been shot dead in Melbourne’s southeast in what police believe was a targeted attack.

Police say the Footscray man was gunned down in front of his girlfriend during a party at an apartment in Oakleigh last night.

“Everyone is known to each other and we’re certainly looking at this as a targeted attack,” Victoria Police Detective Sergeant Simon Quinnell told 9News.

Officers were called to reports of an injured man in Centre Road, Oakleigh South — about 17km south of Melbourne’s CBD — at 3am today.

Paramedics tried to save him, but he died at the scene.

Two people have been taken into custody in relation to the shooting, though no charges have yet been laid. Police say a third person remains on the run.

“From the persons that witnessed this offence, is that one person who is yet to be identified [who] fled the scene,” Detective Sergeant Quinnell said.

The victim’s partner is assisting police.

Police believe the shooter used a handgun in the deadly attack. Authorities are searching a large quarry behind the apartment block for any signs of the weapon.

The victim’s car remains at the scene, with all of its tyres deflated. Police are now treating it as a second crime scene.

“It’s a very quiet complex. I was pretty shocked to learn that something major must have taken place,” one woman, believed to be a resident, told 9News.

The exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain unknown.

Homicide investigation after man dies in Oakleigh South shooting

A 31-year-old Oakleigh South man, 49-year-old Cranbourne North man, and a 34-year-old Footscray woman who was at home at the time of the incident, have assisted police with their enquiries. No charges have been laid.

The exact circumstances of the incident are yet to be determined, but Detective Sergeant Simon Quinnell said the group was known to the dead man and it was a “targeted attack”.

There were up to four people at the Oakleigh apartment when the 40-year-old man was shot, including his girlfriend.

“The information we have from the persons that witnessed this offence is that there is one person who is yet to be identified who fled the scene,” Detective Sergeant Quinnell told reporters on Sunday afternoon.

“Everyone is known to each other, and we’re certainly looking at this as a targeted attack. There’s no information to suggest that this was random or that any member of the public is at risk.

“Anyone who has information in relation to that, come forward and provide that information. Anyone who has potential CCTV footage in the local area or dashcam footage, I’d ask them to come forward.”

Police are also investigating a secondary crime scene in the car park of the Oakleigh complex, where the man’s white ute was parked with all tyres deflated on the vehicle.

No weapon has been found, with investigators believing a handgun was used. Detectives are now extracting CCTV footage from inside the building to piece together what led to the man’s death.

According to a Victoria Police spokesman, State Emergency Service volunteers assisted police with an “evidentiary line search nearby while police also cordoned off a vehicle in the vicinity as part of a secondary crime scene”.

Homicide detectives are appealing to anyone with information to come forward to assist with their investigation.
