Is there anything better that scoffing your face on your lunch break? I did just that at the Aviary Coffee House in Wentworth Point. It was all the Instagram pics that made me do it – I just had to try them for myself. The fat buttermilk vanilla pancakes with chocolate sauce, banana, maple syrup and chunks of chocolate bars is a huge serve, and best for sharing. But if you can’t get through it, the kind staff will pack it up in a box to take home.
On a visit to Leichardt I brunched at The Carpenter Cafe. I had the Pretty Peas which was a slice of toasted sourdough loaded with mashed green peas, braised leek, pecorino and grilled haloumi, and swapped out the bacon for mushroom. Peas are usually on the cards for dinner but I quite enjoyed having them in the morning.
There’s something about Italian deserts that makes me happy (and maybe because it reminds me of my fabulous trip to Italy). Every time I’ve been to Pasticceria Papa in Five Dock it’s always busy, and with dang good reason. The cabinets are packed with cakes and biscuits but because I’m a greedy guts I didn’t want to just have one thing. And that’s where their minis come in handy. I took home a mixed berry tart, chocolate and vanilla cannoli and a pistachio puff. Just enough little snacks for a memorable taste of my favourite country.
The weather is heating up here in Sydney which makes salads so appealing. The vegetarian vermicelli bowl at Madam Pho in Newington hits the spot. This vegetarian version has crispy spring rolls, just like the ones I had in Vietnam. Instead of the regular sauce which contains fish sauce, I had a sweet chilli version. I love the mix of hot, cold, soft and crunchy in this dish.
Until this year, every time I went to Gelato Messina for a scoop, I would always go with a cup. These days I’m all about that crunchy waffle cone. I rarely ever go past something from the specials board and the Banana Split loaded with banana, chocolate chips and cream did not disappoint.
