First Todd Greenberg, now David Gallop to join cricket officialdom

It also builds on an increasingly well-connected and highly credentialed cast of Sydney-based cricket officials at Cricket NSW and the players association, who have been unofficial allies in seeking more transparency from the Melbourne-based national governing body.

While the ACA now has Greenberg, president Shane Watson and influential director Neil Maxwell as major decision makers, Gallop will join a powerful Cricket NSW board fronted by former Credit Suisse Australia boss John Knox, the man whose phone call triggered David Peever’s resignation in 2018. Maxwell, who has been a prominent player agent for stars such as Brett Lee, Mike Hussey and Pat Cummins, is also a director at Cricket NSW, who will now have Baird to do its bidding on the CA board.

NSW and Queensland Cricket, the two state associations who last year pressed for a shake-up of the way the sport is run, are likely to resume their bid for an overhaul of the game’s administration now that the international season has been completed.

CA’s controversial recommendation for Big Bash League teams to stop referring to January 26 as Australia Day may embolden that campaign.

The move was strongly opposed by NSW and the South Australian Cricket Association, whose president, Andrew Sinclair, was publicly scathing of the decision.

Like Greenberg, Gallop was a first-grade player in Sydney, opening the bowling with Geoff Lawson for the University of NSW in the mid-1980s, and his family has an even deeper connection to the game. His father, John, was a long-time chairman of ACT Cricket, whose first-grade one-day competition is named after him.

Gallop, whose son Tom has also played first grade in Sydney, had briefly expressed interest in the ACA job that Greenberg ultimately took but withdrew early in the process.
