Saturday Night Live: Elon Musk stumbles, cast bumbles in brutally awkward episode

This will go down as one of SNL’s worst episodes ever, although it would be wrong to lay the blame entirely at Musk’s feet

Saturday Night Live returned from hiatus with its most controversial episode since Donald Trump hosted back in 2015.

Fittingly, tonight’s host may be the only person on the planet whose ego is a match for the former president: Tesla CEO, and world’s second richest man, Elon Musk.

Zero new cases recorded in NSW on Saturday

New South Wales has recorded zero new locally acquired cases of COVID-19, scuppering fears of a Mother’s Day lockdown.

Six returned overseas passengers in hotel quarantine tested positive among 22,153 tests in the 24-hour reporting period, NSW Health said on Saturday.

Despite the positive news of no community transmission, mystery still surrounds a couple who contracted the virus this week.

There were fears a lockdown would be implemented over the Mother’s Day weekend after the couple in their 50s tested positive, with tracers unable to pinpoint how they became infected.

It is known a returned traveller in hotel quarantine somehow passed the virus on to the couple, but authorities are yet to identify the missing link between them.

The cases prompted the NSW government to introduce a raft of mandatory health restrictions including face masks in shopping centres and on public transport.

But Sydneysiders have been urged to continue going about their daily lives while taking heed of precautions.

The following rules are in force for Greater Sydney, Wollongong and the Blue Mountains until 12.01am on Monday.

*No more than 20 people allowed inside a home.

*No singing or dancing in indoor venues, including places of worship and entertainment venues (with the exception of weddings).

*Masks are compulsory at all indoor venues, including public transport.

*Only two visitors allowed per resident in aged care facilities.

*Drinking while standing up at indoor venues is not be allowed

In an attempt to stem potential outbreaks, NSW Health on Saturday issued an alert for anyone who visited the Double Bay Woolworths on Kiaora Road between 10.45am and 11am on Monday, May 3.

Anyone who visited the supermarket at that time is considered a casual contact and has been asked to get tested immediately and self isolate until they receive a negative result.

Billionaire Elon Musk opens up about Asperger’s syndrome in Saturday Night Live appearance

Billionaire Elon Musk has made his hotly anticipated appearance on Saturday Night Live, saying he may be the first person with Asperger’s syndrome to host the show.

The 49-year-old Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder, who is one of the world’s richest people, opened his monologue by mocking his monotonal speaking style, saying no-one could tell when he was joking.

“It’s great to be hosting Saturday Night Live, and I really mean it,” Musk said.

“Sometimes after I say something I have to say that I mean it.”

He added was the first person with Asperger’s syndrome to host the show “or at least the first person to admit it”.

It may have been the first time Musk has publicly said he has the form of autism.

Musk also joked about his Twitter account, which has more than 50 million followers, and the posts that led some critics to object to his being invited to host the show.

“Look, I know I sometimes say or post strange things, but that’s just how my brain works,” he said.

Musk added a boast that got a laugh.

“To anyone who’s been offended, I just want to say I reinvented electric cars and I’m sending people to Mars in a rocket ship,” Musk said.

Musk did not appear in the show’s unconventional and heart-warming cold open, in which cast members and their mothers did brief bits for Mother’s Day as musical guest Miley Cyrus sang her godmother Dolly Parton’s inspirational Light of a Clear Blue Morning.

Musk brought his own mother, model Maye Musk, on stage to talk about what he was like when he was 12.

The casting choice brought criticism from those who felt the show was celebrating a man for his exorbitant wealth in a time of great inequality and a man who spread misinformation to his huge Twitter following as he downplayed the severity of the coronavirus pandemic.

Loading

Playing on Musk’s reputation as an innovator, NBC live-streamed the episode globally on YouTube, the first time Saturday Night Live has been viewable simultaneously around the world.

Musk took his first stiff stab at acting in the show’s first sketch, a mock soap called Gen Z Hospital, playing a doctor in a fake beard who delivered bad news to a group of youths in their own lingo.

“You all might want to sit down, what I’m going to say might be a little cringe,” Musk said.

“Your bestie took a major L.”

He had small roles in subsequent sketches. He played one of a party full of people out for the first time after quarantine, and he did a type of German accent in a bleached, spiked wig as the director of an Icelandic talk show.

He also played a character close to himself, putting on a bow tie and glasses as a financial analyst named Lloyd Ostertag giving an extended plug for Musk’s favoured cryptocurrency Dogecoin.

Australian rapper The Kid LAROI also appeared on the show. The 17-year-old performed his hit Without You alongside Cyrus.

While Musk is likely to be the wealthiest person to have hosted the show, several other business leaders, politicians and other non-entertainers have hosted the sketch comedy institution in its more than four decades on the air.

Steve Forbes, a publishing executive from a wealthy family and a longshot presidential candidate, hosted in 1996.

Former US president Donald Trump hosted twice — in 2004 as businessman and host of The Apprentice and in 2015 as a presidential candidate. The show’s sketches began making him their primary target the following year, but the choice to team with Mr Trump has brought harsh criticism in the years since.

Billionaire Elon Musk reveals autism diagnosis while hosting Saturday Night Live

Billionaire Elon Musk has revealed his autism diagnosis on Saturday Night Live this weekend, claiming he was the first person with Aspergers to host the show.

The 49-year-old Tesla CEO, SpaceX founder and one of the world’s richest men opened his monologue by mocking his monotonous speaking style, saying no one can tell when he’s joking.

“It’s great to be hosting ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and I really mean it,” said Musk standing on the stage in a black suit with a black T-shirt. “Sometimes after I say something, I have to say that I mean it.”

It may have been the first time Musk has publicly said he has the milder form of autism.

Musk also joked about his Twitter account, which has more than 50 million followers, and the tweets that led some critics to object to his being invited to host the show.

“Look I know I sometimes say or post strange things, but that’s just how my brain works,” he said.

Then Musk added a boast that got his biggest laugh of the night, and an applause break from the studio audience.

“To anyone who’s been offended, I just want to say I reinvented electric cars, and I’m sending people to Mars in a rocket ship,” Musk said. “Did you think I was also going to be a chill, normal dude?”

He had small roles in subsequent sketches. He played one of a party full of people out for the first time after quarantine, and he did a German-ish accent in a bleached, spiked wig as the director of an Icelandic talk show.

And on “Weekend Update” he played a character close to himself, donning a bow tie and glasses as a financial analyst named Lloyd Ostertag, throwing an extended plug for Musk’s favored cryptocurrency dogecoin.

After “Update” anchor Michael Che struggled to understand, Musk as Ostertag admitted, “Yeah, it’s a hustle.”

While Musk is likely the wealthiest host of the show ever — Forbes Magazine puts his fortune at $177 billion — several other business leaders, politicians and other non-entertainers have hosted the sketch comedy institution in its more than four decades on the air.

Perth will come out of its lockdown at midnight tonight, however Premier Mark McGowan has imposed interim restrictions until Saturday including a mask mandate, a four-square metre rule for businesses and restrictions on aged care visits.

“We can’t go back to where we were like last week just yet,” Mr McGowan said.
