Sen. McConnell warns Dems about eliminating filibuster

WASHINGTON, DC – MARCH 02: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) holds a press conference following the Senate GOP policy luncheon in the Rayburn Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill on March 2, 2021 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Samuel Corum/Getty Images)

UPDATED 4:47 PM PT – Saturday, March 20, 2021

The Senate’s top Republican outlined the potential ramifications if Democrats scrap the filibuster. Left-wing lawmakers have frothed at the opportunity to eradicate the procedure in order to impose a far-left agenda on America.

On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) spoke on the Senate floor and said nobody serving in the chamber could even begin to imagine what a “completely scorched Earth Senate would look like.” He pointed out how the Senate operates by unanimous consent on a day-to-day basis and indicated he would seek to slow down Democrats by utilizing the rules of the chamber.

“So this is not a trade-off between trampling etiquette, but then getting to quickly transform the country,” McConnell noted. “That’s a false choice. Even the most basic aspects of our colleagues’ agenda, the most mundane task of the Biden presidency, would actually be harder — not easier — for Democrats in a post-nuclear Senate that is 50-50. Dead even. If the Democrats break the rules to kill Rule 22 on a 50-50 basis, then we will use every other rule to make tens of millions of Americans’ voices heard.”

McConnell also warned Democrats if they scrapped the procedure, Republicans would pass conservative policies with “zero input” from the left if they were to take back the chamber in 2022. The Kentucky senator vowed to take action on several issues including abortion, illegal immigration and gun rights.

McConnell noted the Senate is evenly split and despite what leftist activists want, the American people did not give them a mandate to radically transform the nation. He then reminded his Democrat colleagues that Republicans did not scrap the filibuster when they were in the majority.

The Republican lawmaker stressed how eradicating the filibuster in order to advance a partisan liberal agenda would destroy the fabric of the chamber and go against the duties the American people have entrusted senators to keep and uphold.

“I said to the president at that time: No,” McConnell stated of removing the filibuster. “I said no repeatedly because becoming a U.S. senator comes with higher duties than steamrolling any obstacle to short-term power. I meant it. Republicans meant it. Less than two months ago, two of our [Democrat] colleagues said they meant it, too. If they keep their word, we have a bipartisan majority that can put principle first and keep the Senate.”

Meanwhile, some Democrats in the upper chamber have considered a way to alter the procedure, hoping it would prevent Republicans from stalling long enough to stop a vote on measures like H.R.1.

Moderate Senate Democrats Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Krysten Sinema (Ariz.) have both pledged to protect the filibuster. In early March, Manchin suggested it could be reformed instead.

“The Senate is the most unique body of government in the world,” Manchin said. “It’s basically designed…to make sure the minority has input. I’m not willing to take away the involvement of the minority. I’ve been in the minority [and] I’ve been in the majority. And I can tell you the respect I have on both sides when I’ve been there should be: “I’ve got something to say. Listen to me,’ and I want that to happen.”

In the meantime, the White House does not appear to be on board with completely eradicating the filibuster either. In a recent interview, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain said Joe Biden thinks the filibuster should remain and is an important part of the Senate rules. Klain also said Biden hopes the Senate will change the bill instead of killing the long-standing procedure outright.

Despite the administration’s stance, Biden will likely continue to face pressure from the far-left to back their efforts, regardless of the damage it could do to the Senate as an institution and nation as a whole.

OAN Newsroom
UPDATED 6:15 PM PT – Tuesday, March 2, 2021

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is calling for fellow Republicans to block Joe Biden’s nearly $2 trillion coronavirus relief package. On Tuesday, McConnell continued his attacks on Democrats for attempting to push the bill through Congress without Republican contribution.

He accused Democrats of taking advantage of the budget reconciliation process and trying to sidestep the Senate filibuster. McConnell also said they are trying to push proposals that are unrelated to the coronavirus pandemic.

“So, we’ll be fighting this in every way that we can. It is my hope that, in the end, Senate Republicans will unanimously oppose it just like House Republicans did,” McConnell stated. “I think it’s noteworthy to know we’re in the House. The only thing bipartisan about the proposal was the opposition to it.”

Senators are gearing up to vote on the package, which is expected to hit the Senate floor as early as this week.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) took aim at Democrats and their influence on Big Tech for their efforts to silence conservative voices. Speaking at CPAC on Friday, Hawley vowed not to back down in the fight against cancel culture.

He said Big Tech has taken steps to deplatform conservatives over the last few weeks, citing the removal of President Trump from several social media outlets. He also condemned the liberal media from painting him as a “traitor and secessionist,” for calling for a debate on election integrity.

“The radical left, their corporate allies, the liberal media have tried to cancel me, censor me, expel me, shut me down, stop me from representing the people of Missouri, stop me from representing you,” Hawley said. “And guess what? I’m here today. I’m not going anywhere and I’m not backing down. Not a chance.”

Hawley called on Republicans to reclaim legacy of trust-busting and break up Big Tech companies and international corporations. He said these companies are selling America out to China and selling out our jobs.

45th President Donald Trump excoriates Sen. Mitch McConnell

OAN Newsroom
UPDATED 4:00 PM PT – Tuesday, February 16, 2021

Former President Donald Trump broke his silence on his impeachment trial acquittal and took aim at the GOP establishment.

In a statement released by his Save America PAC on Tuesday, the 45th President said, “the Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political ‘leaders’ like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm.”

Trump went on to slam the minority leader for losing the Senate in 2020 and not fighting hard for election integrity. He also took shots at McConnell’s family over their substantial Chinese business holdings.

This came after McConnell voted to acquit Donald Trump in the impeachment trial, but said he was responsible for the Capitol Hill breach.

“Former President Trump’s actions that preceded the riot were a disgraceful, disgraceful dereliction of duty,” McConnell stated. “There’s no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it.”

Donald Trump ended his statement with a plea to Republican voters, saying “this is a big moment for our country and we cannot let it pass by using third rate leaders to dictate our future.”

He also vowed to back MAGA primary challengers in the 2022 midterms.

Sen. Tom Carper announces bill to give D.C. statehood

OAN Newsroom
UPDATED 1:15 PM PT – Wednesday, January 27, 2021

Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) recently introduced a bill aimed at making Washington, D.C. a state. He took to Twitter Wednesday to discuss his efforts to “give the over 700,000 D.C. residents a voice, vote and full representation in Congress.”

The so-called ‘Washington D.C. Admissions Act‘ has received support from several members of the Democrat Party. However, Republicans are concerned making D.C. a state might place two more Democrats in the Senate.

Democrats would need at least 60 votes in the upper chamber to pass the proposal, but they may only need a simple majority if the filibuster is abolished.

Sen. Hawley, Rep. Stefanik call for int’l probe into Chinese Communist Party’s involvement in COVID-19 cover up

OAN Newsroom
UPDATED 6:45 PM PT – Saturday, January 23, 2021

Several GOP lawmakers urge the Biden administration to hold China accountable for covering-up the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) announced they will re-introduce a bill to launch an international investigation.

The probe will focus on the Chinese Communist Party’s role in covering up the pandemic and it will be spearheaded by American health experts.

Hawley believes the WHO is a pawn for the Chinese Communist Party, rendering them incompetent to conduct an effective investigation. This is a sentiment shared by the Trump administration, which prompted their withdrawal from the WHO.

“China and the World Health Organization did not play straight with the American people,” Vice President Mike Pence stated. “They did not let our personnel into China to get information on the coronavirus until the middle of February. Fortunately, President Trump, in dealing with China from the outset of this administration, standing up to China that had been taking advantage of America for decades in the wake of Joe Biden’s cheerleading for China.”

Stefanik stressed it’s imperative for America to take the lead and find out why the WHO promoted Chinese misinformation. She highlighted the pandemic’s devastating human toll by citing the more than 400,000 American lives lost.

Stefanik demands that the Biden administration fight for American interests as well as stand up to the WHO and China. Additionally, she condemned Biden’s early action to rejoin the WHO before pushing for reforms fought for by President Trump.

“The Chinese government and the World Health Organization, which is virtually controlled by China, falsely declared that there was no evidence of human to human transmission,” President Trump said. “Later, they falsely said people without symptoms would not spread the disease.”

In the meantime, both lawmakers will bring forward a resolution originally brought to the Senate back in March 2020. Hawley and Stefanik urge the international community to find a way for China to compensate all affected nations.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth demands probe of military members in Capitol riots

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Iraqi War veteran who lost both her legs in an insurgent attack, is pressing acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller to investigate the involvement of any current or retired military personnel in last week’s riots at the Capitol.

Miller should demand each branch of the military cooperate with the FBI and Capitol Police to investigate reports that several of the pro-Trump supporters were veterans, the Illinois Democrat said in a letter to the Pentagon chief on Monday.

“If accurate, it would be a disgraceful insult to the vast majority of service members who honorably serve our nation in accordance with the core values of their respective services,” Duckworth wrote.

“Upholding good order and discipline demands that the U.S. Armed Forces root out extremists that infiltrate the military and threaten our national security,” she added, urging Miller to take action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice if any service members or retirees are identified.

Doing so would allow the military to prosecute retirees by recalling them to active service.

The Justice Department has already obtained indictments against several former Air Force and Army service members in the attack on the Capitol, as the FBI works to identify participants.

Meanwhile, Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., has requested a review of troops headed to the Capitol ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, to ensure that members deployed to the inauguration are not “sympathetic to domestic terrorists.”

Other law enforcement agencies are also under investigation and facing heavy scrutiny about their response to the violent insurgency as lawmakers gathered to certify the results of the presidential election.

Two Capitol Police officers have been suspended for their actions — which included taking selfies with protesters and opening the gates to let mobsters into the building. Several more are under investigation.

Sen Perdue quarantines for virus exposure ahead of GA runoff

Exposure to the coronavirus has forced Georgia Sen. David Perdue into quarantine just five days before the state’s high-stakes Senate runoff elections

Perdue’s campaign did not say how long he plans to stay in quarantine, but guidelines of the federal Centers for Disease Control say those exposed to the virus can resume normal activities after seven days if they have a negative test result.

Following that guidance would keep Perdue in isolation for the remainder of the campaign.

“This morning, Senator Perdue was notified that he came into close contact with someone on the campaign who tested positive for COVID-19,” the Perdue campaign’s statement said. “Both Senator Perdue and his wife tested negative today, but following his doctor’s recommendations and in accordance with CDC guidelines, they will quarantine.”

The statement went on to say Perdue’s campaign “will continue to follow CDC guidelines.”

Both Perdue and fellow GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler are on Georgia’s runoff ballot Tuesday. Perdue faces Democrat Jon Ossoff, while Loeffler faces Democrat Raphael Warnock.

If both Republican incumbents lose, Democrats will control the Senate.

Democrats are also bringing their heavy hitters to the state. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris plans to campaign Sunday for Ossoff and Warnock in Savannah, followed by President-elect Joe Biden sharing a stage with the Democrats on Monday in Atlanta.
