Tommy Berry keen to test out Dirty Work against Nature Strip

Top jockey Tommy Berry declared Angel Of Truth his “best chance” at Randwick on Saturday but it is the clash against Nature Strip in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) that has him most excited.

Berry will partner the Hawkes Racing-trained Dirty Work in the feature sprint and while he is not suggesting a boilover, he believes the $16 chance is set to become a big improver in his four-year-old season.

“Off what he’s been doing at home, I’m really keen to see how he is going to go against the likes of Nature Strip and Gytrash,” Berry said.

“I think he got a lot of confidence out of the back end of his preparation in the autumn.

“Every time I’ve sat on him this prep, at trackwork or at the trials, he gives you the feel he just wants to win and he’s never been that sort of horse.

“His mindset has changed a lot since his last preparation, it’s a classic case of the boy becoming a man.

“I’m not saying he is going to beat Nature Strip on Saturday but I think he will go better than people think.

“I am really keen to see how close he can get to The Everest horses because they are the yardstick in the Australian sprinting ranks.”

The 2019 Australian Derby winner Angel Of Truth is 489 days out of the winner’s circle since his famous win but his jockey in Saturday’s Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) believes there is cause for excitement after the horse’s first run for Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes.

The son of Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom (USA) was marked as a horse to follow after his fast finishing second to the in-form Man Of Peace at Randwick on August 15.

“He is my best chance on Saturday,” Berry said.

“He ran so well first-up. He was there to run well but I think he ran better than everyone thought because he still had plenty of improvement to come.

“He’s really come on since the first-up run and he should get a great run from that draw.

“Even the rain on Friday helped. He’ll love a little bit of give in the track, it would have just taken the fire out of it.”

Berry’s other ride for the Hawkes stable on Saturday is Rock in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m).

The Group 3 winning five-year-old returns with two trials under the belt but unlike Angel Of Truth, Friday’s rain has not done the gelding any favours.

“Rock has always been a really good worker and he’s part of the reason why I’m keen to see how Dirty Work goes because they’ve been galloping together,” Berry said.

“He’s likely to get back in an awkward spot and get home with the flashing light. He doesn’t want it any wetter than a soft (5).”

Rock is rated a $13 chance in early markets.

Tommy Makinson faces lengthy ban after genital grab

St Helens winger Tommy Makinson was put on report during Sunday’s match against Castleford Tigers after making contact with an opponent’s genitals.

Makinson was filmed grabbing Liam Watts with an illegal “squirrel grip” after he was tackled during the Super League clash at Totally Wicked Stadium.

Match referee James Child put the 28-year-old on report for “inappropriate contact” and he will face the disciplinary tribunal this week.

Makinson could potentially face an eight-week ban if the offence falls under the Grade F category.

When asked about the incident, Castleford coach Daryl Powell responded: “I think it’ll be looked at and see what happens. It looked a bit awkward. I saw Tommy Makinson apologise to him which you would do because it’s not a great thing to do. We’ll see what happens.”

Meanwhile, St Helens coach Kristian Woolf opted not to comment.

“I haven’t seen it and so don’t want to comment on that until I have seen it,” Woolf said.

“I didn’t know what was going on when the referee stopped the game and put something on report. I had no idea — it only got told to me at the end of the game.”

Makinson has played 233 matches for St Helens since making his Super League debut in 2011. The English gun has also made four international appearances, scoring a hat-trick in his second Test against New Zealand in 2018.

St Helens went on to win the fixture 10-0, with French star Theo Fages the only try scorer.

England rugby union Joe Marler came under fire in March for grabbing the testicles of Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones during a Six Nations match.

Wests Tigers thrash Canterbury Bulldogs in NRL round 7 after Tommy Talau ‘miracle’

The Wests Tigers have reeled off three wins in a row for the first time under Michael Maguire after trampling over Canterbury 34-6 at Bankwest Stadium.

In what was arguably their best performance of the season, wingers David Nofoaluma and Tommy Talau shone with two tries each.

The victory lifts the Tigers to sixth spot, and goes a long way to justifying Michael Maguire’s decision to axe Benji Marshall and Chris Lawrence in recent weeks.

The win also marked Maguire’s 100th NRL win as a coach, while counterpart Dean Pay will again come under pressure for their latest heavy defeat.

The high point came in the 44th minute when Talau scored his first try, going airborne over the sideline.

Greg Alexander said “that’s a miracle” with a memorable way to bring up your first NRL try.

The Bulldogs remain rooted to the bottom of the ladder with just one win and Pay’s men were barely in the contest from the moment they lost Will Hopoate to an ankle injury in just the fourth minute.

Pay said “it wasn’t good, it wasn’t good at all” after competing for the first 20 minutes.

“That’s the challenge for us, we can be up one week and not where we need to be the following week, so that’s our challenge,” he said.

“I’m going to keep turning up and keep doing. At the end of the day, there’s light at the end of tunnel, we need to buy three or four quality players and improve what we’re doing. Keep bringing these young blokes along but for these young guys, it’s another learning curve.”

With English prop Luke Thompson coming and John Bateman and even Nick Cotric linked to the team, he said “there are still negotiations going on”.

While they scored the opening points through Reimis Smith in the 18th minute, the Tigers replied almost instantly through Harry Grant.

The Tigers were rarely threatened thereafter, taking the lead when Talau made the most of a dropped Luke Brooks bomb to post his first career try.

The four-pointer came 22 years after his father and former Bulldogs centre, Willie, scored the first try of his career against Western Suburbs.

Tigers centre Joey Leilua made it a two-try lead at the break when he crashed over from close range, before Talau’s highlight.

The Bulldogs were cannon fodder for rest of the game, with Nofoaluma putting their opposition away with two tries in the space of seven minutes.

The first came when he intercepted a Kieran Foran pass to race 30 metres, before he finished off a Luke Brooks line break in the 61st minute.

Tigers fullback Adam Doueihi, who was denied twice in the second half, put the finishing touches on with their seventh try in the 74th minute.

Screen Themes: Space Force vs Tommy

As truth Television set carries on to clog the airwaves, amusement editor John Turnbull checks out a few of tiny-screen dramas that may possibly be really worth your time.

Place Force: Created by Steve Carrell & Greg Daniels

EXPECTATION CAN BE a major body weight on any creative endeavour. Would we have been as severe on the Star Wars prequels if we hadn’t waited 20 several years for them? Probably.

But my level is that certain directors, writers or actors provide a degree of expectation to a new Television set show. Which delivers us to Room Pressure, made by funnyman Steve Carell and Greg Daniels, writer of The Business office, Parks and Recreation and King of the Hill.

Steve Carrell stars as Mark Naird, a buttoned-down four-star basic who was hoping to get about the Air Force only to be presented the job of obtaining “Boots on the Moon” as the main of the freshly produced titular company.

Assisted by the acerbic Dr Mallory (John Malkovich at his sarcastic greatest), a crew of highly properly trained scientists (Jimmy O. Yang’s Dr Chan Kaifang stands out) and incompetent army sorts (Don Lake as Brad Gregory, a person-star Common and worst ever private assistant), Naird does his most effective to equilibrium the requires of a close to-not possible career and elevating a daughter as a one father. Now and then, he breaks out in music to decrease the rigidity.

It is the household factors of Naird dealing with his incarcerated wife (Lisa Kudrow) and more and more rebellious daughter (Diana Silvers) that reveal House Force is a drama as a lot as it is a satirical comedy.  Absolutely sure, there are laughs, normally created by the destructive incompetence of the un-named president, but the remarkable factors insert a level of engagement with the figures that it took The Place of work a several seasons to land.

If there is one thing that may well harm the very long phrase attraction of Room Power, it is that the humour is extremely topical. The aggravating PR flack is named just after blink-and-you-missed-him Trump sycophant Anthony Scaramucci, referred to by every person as “F**k Tony”, frequently to his deal with.

From this point of view, it is useful to have a doing the job expertise of the farce that is U.S. politics in 2020. If you can chuckle at the self-destructive timebomb that the U.S. is turning into, then House Power might have a thing for you.

Tommy: Produced by Paul Attanasio

For some actors, actively playing a member of the mafia in one particular productive undertaking prospects to their typecasting (as every person from Paul Sorvino to Al Pacino could attest), the phenomenon currently being far even worse when the actor in query stars in a person of the most effective Tv sequence of all time.

I am speaking, of study course, about the Sopranos, and the spectacular Edie Falco who performed household matriarch Carmella. One particular of the very best players in 1 of the ideal Tv set sequence of all time, the only felony misstep was not leaving Carmella on the throne at the conclusion of the series.

13 years later on writer Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco, Quiz Present) legal rights that completely wrong, casting Falco as the to start with-ever woman Chief of Police in Los Angeles. Sure, it is on the other facet of the legal divide, but Abigail Thomas (recognized as Tommy to her pals) faces as a great deal sexism, machismo and unforeseen gun violence as the new major cop as she would have as the very first woman mafia don.

The reality that Tommy is an overtly homosexual character would seem to have offended some people and irrespective of healthier scores, CBS introduced the cancellation of the collection on Might 6th, the working day just before the year finale.

Looking through the comments on the IMDB webpage provides a depressing perception into the further correct-wing response to the demonstrate, with quite a few commenters complaining about the constructive light in which illegal immigrants are forged.

Not that they convey it eloquently.

The Verdict

At the conclude of the working day, Tommy is not a excellent present, but it is a wonderful instance of a respectable display that has been taken out by the political division that dominates every element of American tradition in 2020.

If you look at Space Pressure hoping for The Business office in uniform, then you’re in all probability likely to be disappointed. If you get it for what it is, which is a political satire with authentic coronary heart, then you could come across something to like.

House Force is out there to stream on Netflix. Tommy is now exhibiting on Channel 10 and 10Perform.
