NRL could introduce transfer windows as soon as 2022

The Panthers are among the clubs advocating for a change to the current free-for-all system which results in constant player movement and speculation.

“I think if it is more defined, it would make those negotiations a bit easier in my opinion,” Cameron said. “You need to have the clearly defined windows in which to operate to stop people doing silly things during the year. It would make it very transparent, that’s what people are looking for.

The Bulldogs have unsuccessfully been attempting to prise Matt Burton from the Panthers before his contract expires.Credit:NRL Photos

“You would have to land on an equitable system before you do anything else. If they came up with an equitable system, I couldn’t see why you wouldn’t want to bring it in as soon as you could.”

The Panthers have been in the spotlight over the summer as several high-profile players come and go. The Bulldogs have signed their back-up playmaker, Matt Burton, from next season but Penrith has knocked back requests to release him early.

The NRL has already flagged the prospect of considering stopping players from signing with rival clubs for more money if they break their current contracts. Consideration is also being given to the idea of a central contract register, which would prevent agents from fabricating phantom bids to boost their clients’ asking price.

Fans have cited constant player movement and speculation as one of their major bugbears, while the NRL wants to investigate whether they can commercialise trade windows by making them major events in the season calendar.

The NRL’s most experienced club chief executive, Canberra boss Don Furner, said he would view any proposal with an open mind.

“If it’s for commercial purposes and the NRL believe they can make it into an event the way the [AFL or NBA] draft is, then there may be some merit in that,” Furner said. “My only caution with it is that it’s hard if you put in a rule you can’t police.

“It won’t clean up all the background dealing [of clubs and agents] and the leaks to the media, it’s not going to be the silver bullet to stopping all of that. Those things will still go on and make the paper. We’re be happy to look at whatever the proposal is.”

Wayne Bennett, Ivan Cleary and Nathan Brown are among the club coaches who have previously been the most vocal in their support of trade windows.

“[Contract] values could be more accurate, recruitment processes would be better and more accurate. It feels like it could be better,” Cleary told the Herald last month.

In a change for the current season, the transfer window has been pushed back until August 1 for teams to finalise their 30-man rosters. It could lead to even greater speculation about player movement as clubs tweak their rosters in the run to the finals.

It increases the prospect of Cameron Smith joining a team late in the season if a club retains the salary cap space required to squeeze him in.

West Ham fans must be trusting and patient with change to transfer approach, says David Moyes

avid Moyes has urged West Ham fans to trust him as he tries to move the club away from a wasteful approach in the transfer market.

West Ham’s failure to bring in a replacement for Sebastien Haller after the striker was sold to Ajax for £20million early on in the January transfer window has caused anxiety among the fanbase in east London.

Michail Antonio has been outstanding when leading the line for Moyes but is now the only senior striker at the club, and is always at risk of a hamstring injury.

While Moyes had money to spend, the Scot has been adamant that he would rather gamble and risk going until the end of the season with just Antonio rather than add to the list of expensive, unsuccessful signings made by the Hammers – and has urged supporters to be patient.

“What needs to happen now is that we get away from short-termism,” said Moyes. “We can’t just bring somebody in because we have a centre forward out and they’ll help cover us for three months until the end of the season. The picture is completely changing. I want to bring a new West Ham.

“That has to be that we do things correctly. We want to bring more Tomas Souceks more Vladimir Coufals because of their hunger and their appetite.

“We are trying not to spend excessive money like we have in the past. What’s going to happen is that a lot of people don’t like change. Whatever walk of life it is in. The way West Ham need to go is a change. The small time that we’ve had and the small changes we have made have already made a difference.

“I would hope that most people would look at it and say it is the right way to go. Maybe in a few years people will look at it and say: ‘That hasn’t worked so let’s get back to signing players for any amount of money. Overpaid, overpriced and we’ll do that because that is the way we do it at West Ham.’

“I don’t think it’s the right way and if you’re a West Ham supporter you’d like to think your club is doing things in a way that will give you a chance to succeed. The players I want are the ones who want to be here for the long term and are hungry to play for the club. If anything their value will go up rather than down and we [don’t] end up losing money whenever we bring somebody in.”

Newcastle transfer news: DeAndre Yedlin set for Galatasaray move

DeAndre Yedline has made 10 appearances in all competitions this season

Newcastle full-back DeAndre Yedlin is set to join Turkish side Galatasaray in a deadline-day move.

The 27-year-old American is surplus to requirements at Newcastle as they have two other right-backs.

Yedlin, who recently overcame a work permit issue, joined the Magpies on a five-year deal in 2016.

They are also in talks over a loan for Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock and boss Steve Bruce has confirmed interest in Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury.

Yedlin has made six Premier League appearances this season.

Bruce said: “Quite simply we have had three right-backs at the club now and DeAndre is suited to wing-back. It’s been no secret that we have made changes to a back four.

“I want to wish him best of luck playing in Turkey for a huge club like Galatasaray. He’s a great professional, and a great lad.

“Sometimes you have to let one out to bring somebody in so it could be a busy day for us.”

Chelsea transfer round-up: Tuchel has eye on Bayern Munich star and Halaand race ‘long’

Thomas Tuchel saw the true size of the task he faces on Wednesday evening when Chelsea took on Wolves at Stamford Bridge.

The German replaced Frank Lampard, who was axed on Monday, as Blues boss and took over his first game only a day after his appointment.

A goalless draw, with plenty of possession, left much to be desired from a fan’s point of view and it seems he has plenty of work ahead of him.

That work also includes decisions to be made in future transfer windows.

With just a few days left of the January one it seems unlikely Tuchel will make any moves and instead concentrate with the squad he has been handed.

Still, here are the top transfer stories for Chelsea…

Tuchel gives January update

Thomas Tuchel doesn’t expect any January arrivals.

As said earlier it’s unlikely Chelsea will make any moves this month and Tuchel appeared to confirm that in Friday’s press conference.

“No, [no gaps to fill] but it is hard for me to judge right now,” Tuchel replied when asked about bringing in bodies.

“I am very happy with what I have seen so far. N’Golo Kante came back today so we have 22 players and the goalkeeper.”

The Haaland race is long

Erling Haaland is a wanted man.
Erling Haaland is a wanted man.

It was recently reported that Chelsea’s No.1 target is Erling Haaland. Thomas Tuchel’s arrival doesn’t change that.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has backed this up on The Si Phillips Talks Chelsea Podcast.

He’s claimed that while Chelsea are interested in the striker’s services they’re not the only ones. Which is of no real surprise. It means any real attempt to bring him in would be entering a ‘long and hard’ race.

Alaba arrival?

David Alaba is out of contract in the summer.
David Alaba is out of contract in the summer.

Bayern Munich star David Alaba is out of contract this summer and he’s wanted by a number of clubs.

Among those clubs are Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

According to that man Romano once again, Tuchel is very keen on the 28-year-old.

On the Si Phillips Talks Chelsea Podcast he says the Blues are one of five chasing the Austrian.
