Greg Larsen – This Might Not Be Hell

Greg Larsen – This Might Not Be Hell

Greg Larsen - This Might Not Be HellGreg Larsen - This Might Not Be Hell

This Might Not Be Hell is a one-man play about life on the dole. Set in 2004 and based on true events, this story covers the boredom, depression, financial struggles and the near-constant diarrhoea of living day to day as an unemployed person during the Howard years.

Based in the town of Pauline Hanson’s fish and chip shop, it is an honest look at what it’s like to be dirt poor in Australia and how the welfare system wears you down until you just wish you were dead. It’ll be a laugh riot!

Greg is one third of comedy podcast ‘The Grub’ with Anne Edmonds and Ben Russell. He’s been seen on ABC’s At Home Alone Together, The Weekly, Rosehaven and Get Krack!n.

‘Greg is actually the funniest and you don’t even realise!!? He’s my favourite comedian.’ Anne Edmonds

Cowboy JunkiesCowboy Junkies

An Evening with Cowboy Junkies to feature career-spanning repertoire from The Trinity Session to All That Reckoning

Canadian alt-country pioneers Cowboy Junkies will return to Australian and New Zealand for the first time in 22 years during 2022.

Anyone who has followed Cowboy Junkies’ three-decade-long journey knows the band has always remained true to its unique artistic vision. In 1988 they proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise with its introspective quiet intensity. Their new album All That Reckoning once again gently shakes the listener to wake up. It may be the most powerful album Cowboy Junkies have yet recorded.

Formed in Toronto in 1985 with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar Margo Timmins on vocals Peter Timmins on drums and Michael’s lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass Cowboy Junkies has never had a break-up or taken a hiatus. They’ve never even endured a line-up change. The group has created a critically acclaimed body of work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty and which is ripe for discovery by those who may have lost track along the way or indeed who are new to the group’s charms. Their May 2020 tour of Australian and New Zealand will be one the undoubted highlights of the musical year.

DOC Espresso

Just around the corner from its sister restaurant, Lygon Street’s DOC Espresso has carved out its own niche. There’s no pizza in sight, but you’ll find a range of pastas and focaccias with great coffee to boot.

The cafe and its siblings DOC Delicatessen and DOC Pizza and Mozzarella Bar have named themselves after quality – DOC is an Italian legal term that ensures produce from certain regions are of a very high standard and it shows.

Whether you’re just stopping by for a macchiato and a snack or a more substantial dish of pasta, you’ll find something delicious here.

Mark Chu: The Ecstasy of People Watching

The Ecstasy of People Watching by artist Mark Chu at No Vacancy Gallery, QV Melbourne

QV Melbourne is at the heart of the city’s Lunar New Year festivities, honouring traditions of generosity and celebrating The Year of the Ox. Melbourne born painter Mark Chu has his work exhibited everywhere from Shanghai to Amsterdam to NYC and has appeared in the New York Times.

At 50m2, Mark’s Lunar New Year mural is one of his biggest works to date, towering over passers-by in Jane Bell Lane, just off Russell St. The Giving Ox depicts an Ox leaping up in a moment of blissful joy, signifying the massive strength the zodiac year is known for. It is also interactive, with an AR animation bringing the mural to life with a burst of generosity, symbols and LNY celebrations.

Just down the laneway at resident gallery No Vacancy, Mark Chu will exhibit 50 paintings in a major new show entitled, The Ecstasy of People Watching, opening 25 February, until 28 February. His works ask, how do we gaze differently in this paradoxical time of social distancing and hyper-interconnectivity?
