Downcast Prince William chats about the dismal Scottish weather with Nicola Sturgeon in Edinburgh as relationship between the Royals and Harry is ‘hanging by a thread’ after Oprah ‘truth bomb’

Prince William has chatted about the dismal Scottish weather with Nicola Sturgeon as the relationship between the Royals and Prince Harry ‘hangs by a thread’ following his latest ‘truth bomb’.

The Duke of Cambridge met the First Minister at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh on the second day of his Royal visit.

He wore his Order of the Thistle and diamond and golden jubilee medals as he appeared in his capacity as the Earl of Strathearn and Lord High Commissioner, a role appointed by the Queen.

It comes as the Royal Family’s relationship with Prince Harry ‘hangs by a thread’ after the Duke of Sussex dropped yet more nuclear ‘truth bombs’.

Prince Charles is ‘deeply hurt’ by his son’s latest accusations as the Royals ‘struggle to understand what he hopes to achieve’ with his continued barrage of attacks.

The Prince of Wales’ ties with his youngest son are ‘at their lowest ever point’ and he is sad he was again painted as the villain in the Duke of Sussex’s latest explosive sit down with Oprah Winfrey.

The 72-year-old ‘is at a loss about what to do’ but also ‘frustrated he cannot respond publicly’ to Harry’s blitz of accusations over his parenting style.

In his latest attack, part of a series on mental health for Apple TV+, Harry suggested Prince Charles had allowed his children to ‘suffer’ when it came to the media because of his own negative experiences.

He also accused the monarchy and the media of attempting to ‘smear’ his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, in the run-up to the couple’s bombshell interview with Miss Winfrey in March.

In the documentary, Harry describes how Meghan shared her darkest thoughts with him, including ‘the practicalities’ of how she had considered ending her life.

He said: ‘I felt completely helpless. I thought my family would help – but every single ask, request, warning, whatever it is, just got met with total silence or total neglect.’

Harry, referring to the racism he believed Meghan experienced in the UK, also suggested his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, had been hounded to death because she was dating ‘someone that wasn’t white’ – Dodi Fayed.

Buckingham Palace and Clarence House were last night retaining what sources described as a ‘dignified silence’ on the claims.

William said in a speech today he loved Scotland but remembered how he had been at Balmoral when he heard of the death of his mother in 1997.

He said: ‘Scotland is incredibly important to me and will always have a special place in my heart. I’ve been coming to Scotland since I was a small boy.

‘As I grew up I saw how my grandmother relishes every minute she spends here and my father is never happier than in walking among the hills.

‘My childhood was full of holidays having fun in the fresh air, swimming in lochs, family barbecues with my grandfather in command, and yes the odd midge.’

He added: ‘Scotland is a source of some of my happiest memories but also my saddest. I was in Balmoral when I was told my mother had died.

‘Still in shock, I found sanctuary in the service at Crathie Kirk that very morning and in the dark days of grief that followed I found comfort and solace in the Scottish outdoors.’

Meanwhile insiders said Harry’s relationship with the Royal Family was ‘hanging by a thread’ and revealed ‘deeply hurt’ Prince Charles was ‘at a loss about what to do’.

Had a clear out, Charles? Future King hosts video call in front of just single photo of him with the Queen, Prince William and Prince George… after previously sitting by sideboard heaving with snaps of Harry and the rest of family

Prince Charles has given a video message about the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year with just a single photo of his mother, eldest son and eldest grandchild behind him amid growing concerns about Prince Harry’s brutal criticism of his upbringing and his ‘pot-shots’ at the Royal Family from LA.

The Prince of Wales has been seen throughout the pandemic on video calls from his offices at Highgrove or Birkhall with an array of family photos behind him, including several of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their son Archie.

But the heir to the throne launched a campaign to plant millions of trees to celebrate his mother’s Platinum Jubilee next year, with just a single framed photo of himself with the Queen, Prince William and Prince George – the line of succession to the throne.

It came as Harry hinted he was ready to pour his heart out again about his mother Diana’s death and his  relationship with his father in an emotional trailer for a new mental health documentary for Apple, due for release on Friday. The Duke of Sussex also appeared to question his father’s parenting in a podcast last week.

Royal insiders have expressed their exasperation at Harry and say it is becoming impossible for the family to repair their fractured relationships because of his insistence at taking ‘pot-shots’ from across the Atlantic.

While another source told the Mirror: ‘There is concern given the Duke and Duchess’s recent claims as to just what they may have said to Winfrey. They have not held back in their allegations and there is nothing to suggest they won’t make further ones’. MailOnline has asked Clarence House to comment.

Harry’s criticism of his childhood is merely echoing details shared by a younger Prince Charles in a biography about his own unhappy upbringing, sources close to the Sussexes suggest.

The Duke of Sussex, 36, faced a backlash from Royal aides on Monday after they claimed he had shown a ‘woeful lack of compassion’ for his family by implying Prince Charles and the Queen had failed him as a child.

Speaking to Dax Shepard, host of the ‘Armchair Expert’ podcast, Prince Harry said that his father had treated him ‘the way he was treated’, with Harry asking himself ‘so how can I change that for my own kids?’.

The Duke then went on to add that he and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, had made the move to the US to ‘break the cycle’ of ‘genetic pain’ he had experienced growing up.

Senior palace aides told The Mail on Sunday of a growing sense of ‘bewilderment and betrayal’, and even called for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to give up their titles following Prince Harry’s latest ‘disgraceful’ assault on the Royal Family.

Royal courtiers also claimed the Prince had shown a ‘woeful lack of compassion’ and ‘thrown others under the bus’ during the latest podcast interview, The Telegraph reports.

But sources close to Prince Harry were quick to point out that Prince Charles had lived through his own tell-all moment in a 1994 when he authorised Jonathan Dimbleby to write The Prince of Wales: A Biography, following extensive personal interviews with the Prince, The Telegraph reports.

In the book Dimbleby wrote of Charles’ unhappy childhood with details the Prince laid bare. The book was largely interpreted as Charles’s account of the breakdown of his marriage to Princess Diana.

The comparison comes as a new trailer for the Duke of Sussex and Oprah Winfrey’s new Apple TV+ mental health series featured a video of the young prince alongside his father Prince Charles at his mother Princess Diana’s funeral 24 years ago.

The stand-out feature of the trailer comes as a 13-year-old Harry is shown watching Diana’s coffin passing him during her funeral in London in 1997.

Charles can be seen speaking to his heartbroken son as a female voiceover says over dramatic music: ‘Treating people with dignity is the first act’. Harry tells Oprah: ‘To make that decision to receive help is not a sign of weakness. In today’s world more than ever, it is a sign of strength.’

The trailer for ‘The Me You Can’t See’ – which is set to be released this Friday – features Meghan, Archie and a major hint that the Duke will again pour his heart out about the Royal Family and his relationship with Charles.

It includes tearful interviews with singer Lady Gaga, actress Glenn Close and US chat show queen Oprah herself as well as a feature on a Syrian refugee named Fawzi, described as a hero on the programme.

The two-minute promo, which was released on the Archewell website and YouTube, will likely be seen as another barbed attack on the Royal Family and spark fresh pain for Charles, coming so soon after Prince Harry said he quit as a frontline royal to ‘break the cycle’ of ‘genetic suffering’.

Charles William Davidson has jail sentence extended for rape, sexual assault of massage clients

Charles William Davidson was described as a “predator” during sentencing in the District Court in Brisbane this morning.

The court heard Davidson preyed upon clients at his home or at physiotherapy or chiropractic clinics in Brisbane, Maryborough and Hervey Bay.

While offering massage services, he committed offences that included touching the semi-dressed or naked clients on the nipples and groin areas as well as digital penetration.

The crimes occurred over a 12-year period beginning in 2003.

In 2018, Davidson was jailed for five years and six months after being found guilty of sexually assaulting 10 female clients and raping one.

A jury on Tuesday found him guilty of 40 further offences, including seven counts of rape, against 16 more victims.

Sir Thomas William Glasgow is the ‘epitome of courage’

Sky News host Chris Smith has reflected on Australia’s role at Villers-Bretonneux on the Western Front in World War I and in particular the “mind blowing” story of Sir Thomas William Glasgow.

“I’ve done two radio shows from there on Anzac Day … and eerily enough, only last year, discovered I had a great grandfather who fought there: Bernard Austin Musto,” Mr Smith said.

“Now he’s my family hero”.

“But the real hero of VB, which all Australians should know about, was a fellow by the name of Thomas William Glasgow, a tough farmer from Maryborough in Queensland.

“I’ve got to say, his story is mind blowing.

“Glasgow is the epitome of courage … his immense contribution should never be forgotten.

“He proved that we weren’t just making up the numbers in World War I, we were making a difference.”

DAN WOOTTON: Prince Charles heads to his Welsh bolthole to grieve privately for his father and ‘contemplate the future of the Royal Family’ – after holding extraordinary funeral summit with William and Harry

Prince Charles has left for his cottage in Wales to privately grieve the loss of his father – following an extraordinary summit with Prince William and Prince Harry immediately after Prince Philip’s funeral.

I have learned the grief-stricken Prince of Wales fled to Llwynywermod in Llandovery on his own within 24 hours of his father being laid to rest.

He departed after a face-to-face meeting within the grounds of Windsor Castle with his two sons, where they started the ‘baby steps’ towards a reconciliation following Harry and Meghan’s bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.

But, in an unprecedented development that lays bare the depth of their rift, Charles and William preferred to meet with Harry together so that nobody’s words could be misconstrued afterwards.

A senior royal insider said: ‘Obviously after the worldwide fallout of the Oprah interview trust has to be rebuilt.

‘There was no official wake after the funeral, but Charles, William and Harry took the opportunity to speak and catch-up face to face after many months apart.

‘They were only able to spend a short time together outdoors given Covid restrictions and also without staff, including senior courtiers, overhearing what was being said.

‘It was important to Charles and William that they were both there together. It means nothing spoken about can be misconstrued in the future.’

Given the tensions, sparked by claims of racism and uncaring behaviour by the Royal Family when Meghan says she was suffering from mental health issues, a full rapprochement did not occur.

Another senior royal insider said: ‘There is much pain and hurt on both sides, so this reconciliation will take place in baby steps.

‘First, they need to decide on some ground rules as to how they conduct business going forward in a way that makes all parties feel safe and protected.’

Crucially, Charles and William have the Queen’s support to deal with the situation.

The source explained: ‘The Queen has made it clear to senior advisers that she is united with Charles and William, and was disappointed with aspects of Harry and Meghan’s interview.’

Harry remains in Windsor on an open-ended ticket, with a source revealing earlier today that he could stay for the Queen’s 95th birthday on Wednesday before returning to his pregnant wife in California later in the week.

But Charles decided he needed to contemplate on a solitary basis in peace at his Welsh hideaway, a £1.2million converted farmhouse in the Brecon Beacons.

It is believed his wife Camilla has remained in London, where she is continuing with private commitments.

My source added: ‘Charles felt he wanted to reflect alone.

‘He also wants to attend to the thousands of letters sent to him in condolence of his father’s death.

‘He is acutely aware that this is a hugely significant moment in his life and he feels like he has the weight of the world of his shoulders.

‘All his life he has been heir to throne, but Prince Philip was the patriarch of the family.

Prince William ‘requested Peter Phillips stand between him and Harry at Prince Philip’s funeral’: Duke of Sussex ‘has faced frostiness from family over Oprah interview since return to UK’

Prince William asked for Peter Phillips to stand between him and Harry during Prince Philip’s funeral procession yesterday, it has been claimed.

The brothers were separated by Princess Anne’s son as they walked behind the Duke of Edinburgh’s coffin while it made its way to St George’s Chapel in Windsor yesterday afternoon.

It was the first time William and Harry had appeared together in public since Megxit saw the Duke of Sussex leave for LA with wife Meghan.

The brothers seemed to reconcile as they left St George’s Chapel after the service, however there appeared to be a degree of tension between them beforehand.

Sources have now told The Mail on Sunday that Harry has experienced ‘a great deal of frostiness’ from many of his relatives since arriving in Britain a week ago and self- isolating at Frogmore Cottage, the house given to him and Meghan as a wedding present by the Queen.

Princess Anne, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie failed to acknowledge Harry before or during yesterday’s service, it was claimed.

‘Ironically the only one who has expressed any sympathy towards him is Prince Andrew,’ said one source.

‘He knows from Sarah Ferguson – and now first-hand – how it feels to be the outsider, which Harry very much is.

‘As far as the others are concerned, there is a deep sense of protection towards the Queen and resentment towards Harry. There is little sympathy for him after what he and Meghan said on Oprah.’

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex accused the Royals of institutional racism during the bombshell 90-minute interview last month and claimed one member of the family – not the Queen or Prince Philip – questioned what colour their son Archie’s skin would be.

‘They are still very upset,’ the source added. ‘They are putting on a united front for the Queen. They all think he has behaved appallingly.’

The siblings had maintained stony expressions yesterday as they walked behind their grandfather’s cortege, separated by Peter Phillips.

The Duke of Cambridge strode ahead of his brother as they entered the 15th Century chapel, and once inside the atmosphere remained frosty.

William sat with Kate directly opposite Harry but did not appear to make eye contact, instead preferring to focus his gaze towards his grandfather’s coffin.

However, it was reported last week that William had spoken briefly with his brother on the phone, although the source said communication had been ‘more texts than calls’.

Harry has spoken to his cousin Princess Eugenie who remains a steadfast friend. ‘He is thought to have seen Eugenie, most likely outside since she’s being strict with her new baby,’ said the insider. According to one report, William requested that Peter Phillips stand between him and Harry during the funeral cortege.

Asked about the claim, a friend of Harry said: ‘He’s just doing what he’s told and getting on with it.’

The last time the brothers were seen together in public was on March 9 last year when they attended a Commonwealth service at Westminster Abbey – with the tension between the Cambridges and Sussexes clear to see.

Aides were yesterday reported to have ‘been walking on eggshells’ all week as the funeral plans were tweaked, but there was relief that the brothers have spoken and done so publicly.

The princes talked while walking out of St George’s Chapel following the service, in a sight which triggered hopes among royal fans of a reconciliation.

Prince William and Harry ‘speak on phone’ as Kate acts as ‘peacekeeper’ between brothers

Prince Harry has reportedly spoken to brother William on the phone since landing in the UK – and Kate Middleton is set to act as “peacekeeper” between them at the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

The brothers, who have had a difficult relationship in the last two years, will not see each other in person until Saturday, as Harry is required to isolate.

But insiders say they are putting their differences aside in order to support the Queen following their grandfather’s death.

Kate is said to be “hopeful of a resolution”, The Telegraph reports, as the family puts on a united front.

An insider told the newspaper: “Being so close to her own siblings, Pippa and James, and having witnessed first-hand the special bond between William and Harry, she has found the whole situation difficult and upsetting.”

William and Harry have not met face-to-face in more than a year

And they added: “She is certainly someone who shies away from conflict, and will be hoping to sooth the tensions.”

During his bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry described his relationship with William as “space” and claimed his brother was “trapped” in the royal family.

And wife Meghan alleged that Kate had made her cry, questioning why reports suggesting it was the other way around were not corrected by royal aides.

They will finally see each other on Saturday morning, before the funeral at Windsor Castle, which starts at 3pm.

Harry and Meghan made a string of bombshell claims about the royal family in their interview with Oprah Winfrey

It will be their first face-to-face meeting in more than a year, after Harry and wife Meghan quit the UK for America, eventually settling in a mansion in California.

Another source told the Telegraph that they would be “keen to spend time together as a family”, and said: “They know it is not about them on Saturday – it is about honouring their grandfather’s memory and supporting their grandmother.”

William and Kate are at Amner Hall, their home in Norfolk, and are not due to be in London until later this week, while Harry is quarantining in Frogmore House, Windsor, awaiting the results of a Covid test.

Harry wasn’t joined by wife Meghan Markle, who is pregnant with a girl, or their one-year-old son Archie.

They remain at home in Montecito, California, after doctors advised the duchess not to make the long journey due to her pregnancy.

Prince Harry and Prince William both released statements about Prince Philip. Reading between the lines, the pundits sense tension

In the wake of Prince Philip’s death, royal tributes have flown thick and fast.

Largely absent from this discourse, however, has been Prince William and Prince Harry — that is, until today.

The brother’s statements, though delivered just minutes apart, struck a markedly different tone.

Prince William, second in line to the throne, lauded his late grandfather as an “extraordinary man”, and in what some have interpreted as a veiled barb, pledged to honour Prince Philip’s legacy by continuing to support the Queen “in the years ahead”.

Prince Harry, whose arrival in the UK marks the first time he has returned home since his shock exit from royal life last year, took a decidedly different approach, describing the late Duke of Edinburgh as “a man of service, honour, and great humour”.

“He will be remembered as the longest-reigning consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince and a Duke,” he wrote.

“But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right ’til the end.”

The brother’s have been forthright that they are “on different paths”, and after last month’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey — in which Prince Harry accused Prince William and Prince Charles of being “trapped” in their royal roles — their statements are now being carefully dissected by the British media and royal punters alike.

So how have people responded? And what, if anything, do the statements say about the royal relationship?

Why were the statements so different?

While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s initial response to Prince Philip’s passing — delivered in the form of a two-sentence statement on their Archewell website — drew criticism in some quarters, the opposite could be said for their recent homage.

Echoing social media commentary, the UK’s Daily Telegraph described the statement as a “touching tribute”, while the Daily Mail — a fierce critic of the couple — called it a “return to [Prince Harry’s] cheeky prince persona of the past”.

Loading

Tabloids and royal followers were quick to note the contrast to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s missive, posted on the Kensington Palace website just minutes earlier.

The Daily Mail described it as a “significantly more sombre tribute” focused on duty, while the Daily Beast said it was “intensely personal” compared to that delivered by Harry, which “sought to identify directly with the general public”.

But while Prince William’s statement was decidedly more workmanlike than his brother’s, for some, the tribute’s focus on service offered a needed contrast.

“The royal family needs to be seen to retain dignity and authority, while also offering a glimpse of humanity and emotion that allows the public to connect with them,” wrote Hans van Leeuwen, Europe correspondent for the Australian Financial Review.

“Over-emphasise one element, and that might undermine the other. Prince William and Prince Harry seem to be the yin and yang of this approach.”

What’s the deal with THAT line in Prince William’s statement?

At face value, the brother’s statements offer a heartfelt, and largely innocuous, insight into their relationship with their late grandfather.

But in light of their public disagreements, attention has turned to one line in particular.

Loading

“My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation,” Prince William wrote.

“Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead.”

Noting that Prince William was “undoubtedly intending to reflect his grandfather’s no-nonsense approach to life”, the Daily Telegraph said the “carefully-chosen words” could be interpreted by some as an attempt to contrast the Cambridges’ “own dutiful behaviour with the Sussexes’ departure from royal duty”.

“There is no escaping the inherent implication that he and his wife are the embodiment of the duke and the Queen’s ‘keep calm and carry on mantra’ compared to their escapee brother and sister-in-law,” associate editor Camilla Tominey wrote.

The Daily Beast’s royalist correspondent Tom Sykes went a step further, writing: “If this is a truce, it doesn’t much look like one”.

Did Prince Harry upstage Prince William?

According to British media, while the Palace was aware of the timing of Prince Harry’s statement, royal aids were not involved in its wording.

And the lack of coordination has prompted some to question what that means for the pair’s reportedly fractured relationship.

“That the brothers were unable or unwilling to co-ordinate a joint statement does not bode well for hopes of fraternal reconciliation in the coming days,” Sykes wrote.

While the significance of separate statements may be a matter of interpretation, Prince Harry’s tribute certainly garnered the attention of online audiences.

In both the United States and United Kingdom, searches for ‘Prince Harry statement’ and ‘Prince Harry tribute’ easily surpassed those for his brother.

Where did the new photo of Prince George and Prince Philip come from?

Accompanying the Duke of Cambridge’s statement — in which he lauded Prince Philip’s service “to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family” — was a newly-released image of his late grandfather and young son, Prince George.

Prince Harry and William speak for first time since Oprah chat

Inside details have been released surrounding the royal response to Prince Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah, including his first awkward calls with William and Charles.

Gayle King, famous friend of both Oprah and Meghan, revealed on CBS This Morning she had called the Duke and Duchess of Sussex over the weekend “to see how they were feeling” as the fallout continues.

It’s believed Prince Harry hopes to repair the relationship with his brother before the unveiling of a memorial to their mother, Princess Diana, later this year.

King revealed Harry had spoken to the Duke of Cambridge, William, and Prince Charles since the Oprah interview aired but the talks were “unproductive”.

Prince Harry said during in his chat with Oprah that William and Charles were “trapped” in the palace due to their responsibilities as royal heirs.

“My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave,” Harry said. “And I have huge compassion for that.

“My brother can’t leave that system, but I have.”

The trio have reportedly “barely spoken” to each other since Harry and Meghan announced they would depart the royal family more than a year ago.

Asked if William wanted to leave, the Duke of Sussex replied: “I don’t know, I can’t speak for him…but I will always be there for him, I will always be there for my family.

“I’ve tried to make them see what has happened. We’ve been through hell together and we have a shared experience, but we are on different paths.”

RELATED: How Meghan and Harry’s Oprah interview tricked viewers

‘CONVERSATION NOT PRODUCTIVE’

King also revealed the couple were still upset at the palace and claims no one from the royal family has reached out to Meghan, describing it as “frustrating”.

King said the royal family needs to “acknowledge there are issues” and said “right now, no one is”.

“Houston, we have a problem here. That’s really all they want. They want a conversation. They both want a conversation.”

“I’m not trying to break news, but I did actually call them to see how they were feeling, and it’s true, Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father too,” King said.

“The word I was given was that those conversations were not productive. But they are glad that they have at least started a conversation.

“I think what is still upsetting to them is the palace keep saying they want to work it out privately, but yet, they believe these false stories are coming out that are very disparaging against Meghan, still.”

The insider details came as Harry’s grandfather, Prince Philip, emerged from a London hospital after a four-week stay and was reunited with the Queen at Windsor Castle.

William, just days ago at his first appearance since the interview, had said he had not spoken to Harry “but I will do” as he defended the royals and said: “We are very much not a racist family”.

MEGHAN IGNORED

King said the frustration from the couple came from the fact that the palace was saying one thing to the public but doing another in private.

“No one in the royal family has talked to Meghan yet, at this particular time,” she said.

“I think it’s frustrating for them to see that it’s a racial conversation about the Royal Family when all they wanted all along was for the royals to intervene and tell the press to stop with the unfair, inaccurate, false stories that definitely have a racial slant.”

King said it was “hard to move forward” for Harry and Meghan without a positive response from the family.

“Until you can acknowledge that, I think it’s going to be hard to move forward. But they both want to move forward with this and they both want healing in this family.

“At the end of the day, that is Harry’s family.”

The palace previously announced it would launch an investigation after The Times London reported that a former aide had made a bullying allegation against the Duchess of Sussex during her time as a working royal at Kensington Palace.

The investigation will now be led by an external law firm rather than the initial in-house inquiry the palace first announced.

On March 2, the outlet alleged that Meghan drove out two personal assistants and left staff feeling “humiliated”. Ms Markle’s team strongly refuted the allegations.

Then on March 3, Buckingham Palace said it was “clearly very concerned” about the allegations, and that the palace human resources team “will look into the circumstances outlined in the article” and would seek to speak to current and former staff.

King defended Meghan against the claims, saying “anyone who has worked with her will tell you exactly who she is”.

“You know, she’s really a very sweet, caring person. And as I say, Meghan has documents to back up everything that she said on Oprah’s interview. Everything.”

A statement from the Queen the day after the interview said she wanted the family to deal with the situation “privately”.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the statement read.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”
