That’s curtains for the Raiders. George Williams drifts across field and is picked off by his opposite number. Williams has endured a bit of a shocker tonight, Cleary rises to the occasion to continue his really good start to the season. Penrith march onwards and it’s 30-10 with five minutes still to play.
So we have 13 minutes to go and Canberra need something special to climb out of this hole now. But that’s a poor offload from Papalii and it goes to ground, Penrith ball. He’s trying to spark them the big fella. And even worse news for the Raiders is that Josh Hodgson is on the sideline in pain with a hip injury, hopefully it’s nothing serious but it doesn’t look like he will be back tonight.
Staines has his second and now there is a stink right in front of the crowd as well. Crichton and Tapine going at it… Tapine wasn’t even on the field, was waiting to go into the fray. That flick pass from Paul Momirovski was just sensational. Brilliant stuff. Panthers in charge again.
Hudson Young with the initial break and that ends with Croker diving over for the acrobatic finish in the corner. Croker can’t add the extras from the sideline but it’s game on here, Panthers up 18-10 in front of this sell out crowd.
Neither side able to advance their score from that 18-6 halftime ledger. But Penrith are looking more likely I think, To’o is just a demon from back. But Canberra are holding firm for now, Tom Starling into the fray, Josh Hodgson will float around the middle now. Maybe that can spark something.
Nathan Cleary thumps it out on the full, a rare error given his kicking game, after Williams threw a very ordinary forward pass to hand it over earlier. Josh Papalii back for the Raiders and he must have an impact through the middle, Canberra have been owned in that space.
What can Ricky Stuart conjure here. But the Raiders under pressure already here in the second half as they struggle out of yardage and Penrith pour on the pressure.
That got ugly fast for the Raiders after a strong start. But with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad off the field (HIA), a left-edge reshuffle saw them fall apart and Penrith pounced. Liam Martin and James Fisher-Harris have provided immense punch through the middle and Luai and Burton and Staines and co. have done the rest. What a terrific young team they are and they can go on with this in the second half and post a score.
What a player he’s becoming… set up Burton before, now does it all on his own. Penrith had them stacked up to the left and the defence was ready for the fast shift. But Luai just puts it on the boot, dinks it behind the line and chases and scores himself. Now the Panthers are up 18-6 as we near the half.
